What happens to a river when the fish come back? 🐟

Meet Shae Shandroff '27, a biology major who spent her summer along the Bellamy River in Dover finding out.

Each spring, river herring migrate in from the ocean to spawn, feeding much of the ecosystem while they're at it. Decades of damming cut off their access to historical spawning grounds, and until two dams came out in 2018 and 2020, their reach into the Bellamy was severely limited.

Working with Nathan Furey, associate professor of biological sciences, Shae studied how the herring's return shapes predator activity along the restored river. She set trail cameras and documented signs such as footprints and s**t, recording which predators turned up, where, and in what numbers during and after the 2026 migration season.

Her first photo download day delivered exactly what she was hoping for.

"I was sitting on a little island in the middle of the Bellamy River, nervous about not seeing anything on the cameras, and immediately opened to a photo of a great blue heron with a river herring in its beak," Shae says.

"I chose UNH because of a feeling I got the first time I drove through campus. Students were laying in the grass with friends, laughing, and playing games, which made me feel welcome. I applied that night, and I've never looked back."

Meet Morgan Patla '27, a human development and family studies major from Chicopee, MA, who followed her instincts to UNH and hasn't stopped growing since.

💬 I came to UNH as an English teaching major, but once I realized it was more focused on teaching at the middle and high school level, I decided to explore other options. A friend in my dorm hallway freshman year was an human development and family studies student and explained the major, the courses, and the long-term opportunities — and I decided to make the switch. I love that my major gives me the flexibility to explore so many paths within child and human development.

One of the most impactful experiences I've had at UNH was my child development internship at the Child Study and Development Center right here on campus. After studying child development and teaching across my coursework, I completed my internship in the infant classroom, where I was able to apply everything I'd learned to real-world situations. It helped build my confidence in working with children and in myself as a future teacher.

For the future, I plan to complete UNH's Accelerated Master's program in elementary education and become a 2nd-grade teacher. From there, I hope to grow into a leadership role, whether that's as a guidance counselor, principal, or superintendent.
