⛰️We have mountain climbers! Our 4th grade traveled to Pilot Mountain last Friday, starting the day by reading a Cherokee story called “Yonder Mountain.” Then everyone hiked the Pilot K**b trail, did some observational drawings, and participated in ranger programs. Students participated in a rock identification scavenger hunt, played a rock cycle game, and participated in an erosion lab. Students will use their observational drawings to paint landscapes and write narratives about the trip.

Learning takes place everywhere, not just within the walls of a classroom! As a downtown school, we take advantage of the many opportunities for outdoor learning and walking field trips. Here our kindergarteners sketch our school, 3rd graders visit the library, and 7th graders visit the Geer Street Learning Garden.

Megan’s 4th Grade class last year, “The Wonderful Wolves” raised over $2000 for red wolf conservation in North Carolina from their hand painted holiday card and calendar sales. This money was used to adopt a red wolf from the NC Zoo and the Museum of Life and Science, and donations were made to the Red Wolf Coalition and the North Carolina Wildlife Federation. They really made a difference in the preservation of this important animal. Megan can’t wait to see what this year’s class will accomplish!

🎨🖌️🎭🎶What is Arts Integration at CPSC? A thoroughly integrated Arts curriculum is fundamental to CPSC’s mission and philosophy. The Arts are critical for developing each child’s personal and intellectual potential — a vital element, relevant to all our work, and essential to hands-on learning. The Arts encourage the entire community to play and explore. Through the Arts - whether in studio art, theater, music, or other pathways - students examine and celebrate their own uniqueness and their own lives. They develop self-confidence, acceptance, and a creative approach to life.

“We are not the passengers, we are the crew!” This artwork the 5th graders collectively created speaks volumes to our philosophy. We are a child-centered community of learners working together. There is nothing we can’t do together, CPSC!

We kicked off this week with a visit from Mayor Leo Williams! The 8th grade teachers led this event as we work to organize a Student Government Association this year with 7th and 8th grade students gathered in the Teaching & Learning Center while other grade levels participated via livestream. He talked about his journey to becoming Mayor, and how important it is that they make a difference. The students were impressed and inspired by our local leader.
