As part of a university-wide effort to elevate the educational experience for all Duke learners, Learning Innovation & Lifetime Education (LILE) is transitioning into the new Duke Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The CTL will serve as Duke’s central hub for pedagogical innovation and digital education strategy partnership.
“This new structure reflects our strategic effort to align our people and resources with Duke University’s mission. Refocusing these important teaching and learning support services will enable stronger coordination and collaboration and enhance our ability to meet the evolving needs of our students and faculty,” wrote Provost Alec D. Gallimore in his announcement about the CTL.
The CTL will focus heavily on engagement with faculty to ensure the center launches with both faculty and learner needs at its core, but will remain home to several functions previously housed within LILE. Read our full announcement for more details:

While artificial intelligence is disrupting industries, and even replacing humans in some areas, we still live in a world where artificial and human intelligence need each other. That’s the message that was driven home at the recent Triangle AI Summit, which brought together academic and industry leaders to delve into what a future with AI will look like.
Hosted by Provost Alec Gallimore on May 30, the summit included a keynote by New York Times technology reporter Cade Metz and countless panels on AI’s impacts on society and its role in scientific innovation. Speakers engaged with AI’s dangers and potential, how AI is transforming the workforce and higher education, and why AI is not poised to replace humans just yet.
Drawing an audience of approximately 450, the summit’s topics ranged from AI “hallucinations” to the use of AI technologies to detect strokes in brain scans. The event also included demos of how educators are using AI in the classroom and a panel of Code+ Duke students sharing their perspectives on AI.
“There’s no turning back. Students are using it. The world is using it,” Jun Yang, Bishop-MacDermott family professor of computer science at Duke, said in a panel discussion. “We have to figure out ways to deal with it. We have to learn to move on, and envision a world where AI is an extension of human intelligence.”

Duke's Center for Applied Research and Design in Transformative Education (CARADITE) https://lile.duke.edu/caradite has just launched "Portraits in Practice" - a new series highlighting innovative teaching at Duke.
The first publication, "'Let's Not Know Together,'" examines how students and faculty are experimenting with AI in writing education, challenging us to reconsider what we truly value in learning. Rather than viewing AI as a threat, these Duke community members are embracing curiosity and critical inquiry.
