Easy Ways to Celebrate Shavuot 06/05/2022

Chag Shavuot Sameach! Happy Shavuot, the holiday of diary! 🥛 🧀 🍦 🐮

Here’s some fun resources on this wonderful holiday from our friends at PJ Library:

“Originally a harvest festival, Shavuot comes seven weeks after the start of Passover, and celebrates the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. Shavuot is also the unofficial universal "eat all the ice cream you can" holiday of the Jewish people. Seriously -- Shavuot is a holiday that feels made for the young and young at heart.”

I get a lot of questions about our policy regarding priority admission, so here are a few FAQs:

Q: Who qualified for priority admission to Beth El Preschool?
A: Currently enrolled students, siblings of currently enrolled students, siblings of alumni students, and students whose families are members of Beth El Synagogue or Watts Street Baptist Church all qualify for priority admission.

Q: How do I indicate on my application that I qualify for and request consideration for priority admission?
A: When you fill out your application, the fourth question will ask you to identify any priority enrollment groups to which you belong. If you indicate one of those groups and complete your application by the February 14th deadline for priority consideration, you will be considered as requesting priority admission.

Q: Does priority admission qualify me for any discount or scholarship?
A: Not necessarily. We do offer discounts for younger siblings who enroll while an older sibling still attends and a small discount for members of Beth El Synagogue and Watts Street Baptist Church.

Drop other questions in the comments or email Linsey at [email protected].

Beth El Preschool wants to wish Rabbi Daniel Greyber a special happy birthday! He regularly visits the preschool to share a story with the children and is so generous with his time and knowledge. We can't thank him enough for his contributions to our preschool community and the larger Durham community.

In true Beth El Preschool fashion, when I say "Good Morning, Beth El Preschool", let's all reply, "Happy birthday, Rabbi Dan!"

This week is teacher appreciation week, we love our Beth El Preschool teachers! Ms. Jill, Ms. Megan, Ms. Melissa, and Ms. Ronit have done amazing things this year making adjustments for COVID-19, changing their curriculum to serve a broader age range of students, and weathering the many transitions we have undergone in the last year. Please share your gratitude and love with them this week!

Spring is in full bloom at Beth El Preschool! The flowers and our wonderful children are growing every day! We are enjoying Ms. Barbra, our outdoor music teacher. She has so many songs and movement activities to keep us busy. This morning we finished our Israeli Independence Day projects with treats made in the shape of flags. This week we are looking forward to Picture Day and starting our Spring themes. Look for more pictures to come as we continue learning through play!

Today, we had Paul, a volunteer with the American Wildlife Refuge in Raleigh, visit us! He brought Princess, an American Kestrel Falcon, and Speedy, an Eastern Screech Owl, to meet the kids. We learned that both birds weigh just a little more than a stick of butter and both like to eat bugs and moths! We also learned that Eastern Screech Owls are the smallest owl found here in the Eastern US and that American Kestrel Falcons can dive at about 180 miles per hour!
Thank you to American Wildlife Refuge for brining us this great program today, and for the amazing work you do in rehabilitating birds of prey and releasing as many of them back into their natural habitats as you can. If you want to know more about them and their mission, or have them come do a program for you, visit https://awrefuge.org/.

We are back from spring break and spring sure has sprung! On our first day back we got to see the beautiful flowers we planted blooming, a lovely lady bug joined one group for class, and the other group had a whole swarm of bugs hatch from one of the stumps on the playground!

Today was our last day of school before Pesach and Spring Break. A visit from Rabbi Daniel Greyber and lots of fun songs and activities were a great way to head out to break. We look forward to seeing all the children back on Tuesday, April 6, and until then, chag Pesach sameach.

We are already starting our Pesach preparations here at Beth El Preschool! All the students are talking about the Seder and the story of Passover and both classes have begun making their own Seder plates! We are all excited to try matzo as part of our snack next week and keep learning more about Pesach.

Is it too early for some Passover humor? I saw this in the Triangle Jewish Connection Facebook group and couldn’t resist sharing.

While the adults are a little shocked by the return of rain and cold weather this week, the kids continue to be great sports about it all. Here is hoping that sunshine and warm weather are in our future again soon.

Spring is in the air and on our playground too. This week the children noticed all kinds of changes. Flowers are beginning to bloom on the weeping willow, squirrels are busy jumping from tree to tree, and the Penguins were so excited to see the first flowers popping up from the bulbs they planted way back in the fall.

It's so fun to work together at Beth El Preschool. You can see pictures of some children measuring each other against a branch of the weeping willow, practicing new skills, playing games and building friendships. All in a day's work for these amazing little people.

Photos from Beth El Preschool Durham's post 03/10/2021

The sun is shining and as usual, we are busy at work and play. The younger class has spent a few days creating their very own firetruck. Working together is fun.

Meanwhile, the Penguin class has been busy putting out fires and delivering mail. We are learning about all kinds of jobs in the community. Looking forward to enjoying our lovely playground during the rest of this beautiful weather week!

Today, as part of our safety week, we were fortunate to have three officers from the Durham Police Department visit Beth El Preschool! Thank you to Officer Mathews, Officer Whisnant, and Officer Super, a community resource officer, for taking the time out of your day to answer questions, tell the students about your job, give safety advice, and show us your car!
