High School US History Course Description 09/01/2021

Too often, history is presented as a parade of dead white men and their actions to be memorized and put on a boring timeline and then forgotten. Instead, what if U.S. history explored the histories of ALL Americans -- immigrant factory workers, Japanese-Americans in World War II, indigenous activists, suffragettes, enslaved people engaged in resistance, and more? What if it invited students to dig deeply into primary sources, analyze the past, and create their own interpretations? What if it connected the past and the present in ways that showed students how relevant history is to their own lives and their own engagement as citizens?

Homeschooled high school students will LEARN history by DOING history in my online year-long U.S. history course. We will meet weekly over Zoom with ongoing discussions, videos, and supplemental materials in Canvas. Students can take an ungraded option if they don't wish to turn in assignments (or if parents want to make up and grade their own) or can take a graded option with creative opportunities to engage with history in research projects, essays, reflection journals, visual art options, podcasts, and more. All students will complete an oral history interview with someone they know to learn history from the people who lived it.

Class starts next Wednesday -- check out the course description and register today (link to registration page is in the document)!

Spring and Summer 2021 Classes 02/26/2021

This spring, I'll be offering two online classes that have been popular with both homeschooled and traditionally-schooled students over the past few years, Academic Skills for Teens and Introduction to Essay Writing. Later in the spring and into the summer I'll be offering an elective on digital photography for teens and a class on teaching online for adults who are interested in digital teaching and learning and want to get started with imagining and creating their own online courses, building on best practices in both asynchronous (Canvas, Moodle, Sakai, etc) and synchronous (Zoom, Web-Ex, etc.) online learning. You can learn more about ALL of these courses below and by following the Course Description links. For more about my teaching philosophy and courses, visit my website: http://kathryn-wall.com If you want to know more about any of these specific spring or summer courses, please see the course description links below and email me at [email protected] if you need more information or have questions. When you're ready to register, please do so here: https://forms.gle/ypQLcef3CLW71f8K7

Academic skills for Teens is now with updated content on succeeding in online learning environments. Late in the academic year is a great time to fine-tune some skills to finish the year strong, get a fresh perspective on academic success, and get ready for next year!

I'm also offering my Introduction to Essay Writing class that guides students through the process of writing an essay on a topic of their choosing (pretty much anything goes!) as they learn how to craft and argument, write a thesis statement, organize an essay, create citations, and develop a process for brainstorming, drafting, writing, revising, editing, and proofreading that will demystify essay writing and take the stress out of academic essay assignments. Students will get feedback on their papers every step of the way, both from the instructor and their peers.

Later in the spring and into the summer, I'll be offering two additional online classes, an elective for teens and a professional development/enrichment class for adults:

First, Digital Photography Workshop (for teens) will let students dust off that digital camera (or phone!) and really learn what it can do! I taught this class several times at in-person Friday Enrichment and to a group of teens online a year ago, and it was a blast every time! Every week, we'll learn more about the technical and artistic aspects of photography and experiment with another type of photography (portraits, low light, macro, landscape, etc). A weekly prompt will encourage students to push their creative limits with a photography assignment that will teach them something new about their cameras, encourage growth as a photographer, and hopefully get folks outside safely and having a lot of fun while we are all still dealing with the impact of Covid 19. Our Zoom discussions every week will allow students to share their work, get feedback and critique, and ask questions or share thoughts about what they are learning.

Next, Teaching Online Courses will be an opportunity for anyone (18+) interested in teaching online to learn about the best practices in online teaching, both in asynchronous environments like Canvas, Moodle, Sakai, etc. and synchronous meetings like Zoom and Web-Ex. I've been developing and teaching online courses since 2001 when I was one of the key course developers/teachers/mentors in the Carolina Online Teacher Program at LEARN North Carolina in UNC's School of Education. In this class, you'll get started creating your own online course in Canvas, develop a course outline, and fully build out and pilot the first module of your course, with support and feedback every step of the way.
