SWP is proud to support Sanford Grads in American Grand Strategy in bringing the ladies of the Bombshell Podcast to Duke! Supporting women in all policy careers, especially the male dominated ones (National Security!), is so important and these ladies are great examples of that. Give the podcast a listen wherever you get your podcasts from!

As you know, a record-breaking number of women - especially women of color - ran in this election for the Senate, House of Representatives, Governorships, and State Governments. After a great night of hard-fought races, we have a lot of firsts in gender and diversity to honor! Here are a few highlights:
-First Muslim Women: Democrats Rashida Tlaib (MI 13) and Ilhan Omar (MN 5) are the first Muslim women elected to Congress.
-Youngest Woman: At 29 years old, Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY 14) is the youngest woman elected to Congress.
-First Native American Women: Democrats Sharice Davids (KS 3) and Deb Haaland (NM 1) are the first Native American women elected to Congress.
-First Black Woman in Massachusetts: Democrat Ayanna Pressley (MA 7) is the first black women elected to Congress in her state.
-First Women in Iowa: Democrats Abby Finkenauer (IA 1) and Cindy Axne (IA 3) are the first women in the House of Representatives for Iowa. Republican Kim Reynolds becomes the first elected woman governor of Iowa.
And so many more!
Probably not everyone won that we would have liked last night, but we should be proud that the Federal and State governments are much closer to physically representing the people they serve. Thank you for your efforts in this election. Now, take a well-deserved break and gear up, because the 2020 election is right around the corner and there is still work to be done.

Tomorrow, SWP and CDI will be co-hosting Hearing Women: An Open Dialogue. This event is an opportunity for all female-identified members of the Sanford community to come together for a discussion regarding Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony last week and the accompanying news cycle on sexual assault and women’s anger.
There is no set agenda for this roundtable. It is simply an opportunity for us to be together, eat (lunch will be provided), and talk. Tiffany Benford, LCSW-A, a representative from the Duke Women’s Center, will be on hand to guide us through a facilitated discussion.
Please feel free to come and go as you please during the 2-hour block – you are welcome to come for the entire time or just pop in when you can!
