IEP season is coming! Friendly reminder of some Placement Decision Dos & Don'ts!

Image text: Ensuring LRE in Placement Decisions

DO
Prepare by exploring supplementary aids and services (SAS) that will facilitate placement in general education classes, settings, and extracurriculars.
Start with the school and classes the child/youth would attend if nondisabled.
Check that the team includes someone with demonstrated success facilitating placement in general education.
Implement SAS that facilitate placement in regular class(es) and participation with nondisabled peers.
Utilize supports for school personnel for training and collaborative planning.

DON'T
Wait until the meeting to consider possible SAS that will facilitate placement in general education classes, settings, and extracurriculars.
Assume general education classes, settings, and extracurriculars won’t work.
Avoid the need for expertise by someone with demonstrated success achieving satisfactory placement in general education.
Exclude SAS that facilitate placement in regular class(es) and participation with nondisabled peers.
Neglect supports that school personnel will need, like training and collaborative planning time, to facilitate placement in general education.
