People ask me a lot: how do you know so much about schools? The short answer is: it’s a full time job!
Between weekly tours, interviewing teachers and parents for my podcast , meeting with dozens of parents each month, and staying on top of the news… that’s how it’s done!
How are you feeling about the news this week? ❤️
Can we talk about magnet schools for a sec? 👀
Because there is SO much confusion around what they actually are, who they’re for, and how the whole application process even works — and I wanted to bring in the actual expert to break it all down.
This week on my podcast, The Education Breakdown, I sat down with Tamani Powell, who has been working in Wake County’s Office of Magnet Programs since 1998. She has seen it all, answered every question imaginable, and she came ready to share.
We talked about where magnet schools came from (the history is actually really interesting), what the different themes mean, whether your kid has to be “gifted” to attend (spoiler: no), and how the application process actually works in
If you live in the Raleigh/Wake County area, this episode was made specifically for you. Application windows, ranking strategy, the algorithm myths she’s tired of hearing… it’s all in there.
New episode is live now. Find us on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and now YouTube!
💬 Drop your magnet school questions below! Whether you’re just starting to research or deep in the application process, let’s talk it out. Tamani gave me a lot to work with and I want to make sure you all get the answers you need. 👇🏽

Year-round schools are one of the most misunderstood parts of the Wake County system, and one of the questions I get asked most often.
“What does year-round actually mean?”
“Is it better for kids?”
“How do the tracks work?”
“Can anyone apply?”
If you’ve had any of those questions, you’re not alone.
The biggest misconception I see is that year-round schools are a completely different type of education. In reality, students are in school for the same number of days as traditional calendar schools—the year is just structured differently.
Instead of one long summer break, the year is broken into shorter cycles, with more frequent breaks built in throughout the year. For some families, that rhythm works beautifully. For others, it can be harder to manage.
And then there’s the piece that tends to catch families off guard: tracks.
Not all students in a year-round school are on the same schedule, which can impact everything from childcare to family vacations.
On top of that, many year-round schools (not all) in WCPSS are part of the choice system, which means:
→ you have to apply
→ acceptance isn’t guaranteed
→ and timing matters more than people think
All of this is why I always come back to the same idea:
there’s no one “best” option—only what works best for your child and your family.
If you’re trying to decide whether a year-round calendar makes sense for your family, this is exactly the kind of conversation I help parents think through.
Save this for later—you’ll likely come back to it as you’re exploring your options.
And if you’re in the middle of the process now, I’d love to hear—what questions do you still have? 👇
