Often when you visit campus for the first time you will hear our teachers and staff refer to materials in the classroom as "work," and if you're new to Montessori that might seem peculiar to you. What is "work" for young children?

Maria Montessori defined work as purposeful activity. Children find joy in choosing and completing work from the shelves. Work can range from practical life activities such as flower arranging, to mathematics, geography, sensorial activities and more. A work cycle refers to the dedicated period of time set aside within the class that children are free to choose a work, complete it, and return it to the shelf the way they found it so other children can enjoy it.
