It is important to take part in the recently released Campus Culture Survey. The Survey will provide vital information about the experience of members of our community with marginalized s*xual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. It is important that information around our experience at Duke is captured because decisions around funding, resources, and support are frequently made using this type of data.

The committee should be praised for acting immediately when it was brought to their attention that legal, and not preferred names were used in the original release of the survey. While we know that harm was caused to transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming members of our community, immediate action was taken, and a permanent solution was found so that future correspondences will not replicate this.

We understand this might diminish trust and thus your willingness to take the survey. Even so, I ask that you take the survey because it is critical that the climate for our community be reflected in the data.

I also want to note, that the survey uses language around s*x, gender, gender identity, and gender expression that might be less familiar to you. The committee recognizes that and while changes cannot be made at this point without losing significant amounts of data, they are incredibly open to feedback and will take it to heart for future iterations.

The penultimate question to the demographics section on the survey asks, "What could Duke do better in terms of diversity, equity and inclusion?". The committee has asked that specific feedback about the survey be included here, including any important parts of your experience that you feel the survey did not capture. They have committed to ensuring the responses to this question be very carefully considered and analyzed.

If you have any specific questions feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Angel Collie
Director, Duke Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity
