The total trip included 7,356 miles, 21 states, 15 days, and 361.755 gallons of fuel for a 20.33 MPG average. On-road maintenance was limited to just fuel and oil top-offs to cover normal consumption, typical for a 22-year-old V8 running highway miles.
Route highlights included the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Pikes Peak and the Four Corners Monument, the Grand Canyon and Horseshoe Bend in Arizona, the Bonneville Salt Flats, Yellowstone National Park, and Mount Rushmore, connecting New York to California along a southern route out and a northern route back.
The B6 platform's S4 came from the factory with a 4.2L V8 (340 hp, 302 lb-ft) and running a 6-speed manual in this case.
