On Friday, September 4th at 8:00pm in Johnson Theater, UNH welcomes Tierney Sutton and Tamir Hendelman as a part of our Traditional Jazz Series!

Jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton and pianist Tamir Hendelman share a musical relationship spanning over 20 years. Meeting in Los Angeles in the late 1990s, they balanced busy individual careers—Sutton with her Grammy-nominated band and Hendelman with Barbra Streisand and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra—before deepening their partnership during the pandemic with virtual and live-streamed shows.

Tickets can be purchased at www.unharts.com. They are $12 for General Admission and $10 for Students/Seniors.

It's hard to put into words how meaningful the last few days have been. The UNH Department of Music is celebrating the 80th Anniversary of SYMS. For part of this celebration I organized about two big bands of alumni musicians to record all of the Seiler Commissioning Series compositions. These musicians traveled from all over the country to make these sessions and I couldn't be more honored that they chose to participate.

If you didn't know, Dave Seiler worked at UNH for 43+ years and developed a deep tradition of excellence in the jazz studies program. This perennial commissioning series permanently ties his name and legacy to the program and gives our current students the opportunity to collaborate with some of the most prominent composers in our field and give a world premiere each year.

Now that the session is complete, the alumni jazz band (along with an alumni choir, band, and orchestra) have a performance together tonight for the current campers as we open the 80th SYMS.

Check out the photos from the session and from our hang last night at Newick's. We can't wait to share this recording with you as it's something we are all very proud of... stay tuned!
