When Duke juniors (and cousins!) Neve Greenwald and Danya Belkin describe their typical family Shabbat dinner, the image is of multiple generations of family members speaking Spanish over a meal. The dinner table is filled with empanadas, arroz con frijoles negro (black beans and rice), tortilla soup, and plátanitos. Their grandparents are Jewish immigrants from Mexico and Cuba. 🇲🇽🇨🇺

Learn how the two founded Jewtinos at Duke, an affinity group of Jewish and Latino students, which has grown into a community of ~50 students who celebrate their rich heritage and identity with their peers.

🌟 Explore the vibrant fusion of Jewish and Latino cultures at Duke by reading more at: students.duke.edu/jewtinos-at-duke

🎉Join the celebration! TOMORROW (Friday, March 1) is our annual JEWTINOS SHABBAT! Song session begins at 5:30pm, Shabbat services at 6:00pm, and a Latin American themed dinner at 7:00pm, all at the Freeman Center for Jewish Life. To RSVP for dinner, text “Shabbat” to 984-333-5603. All are welcome, whether or not you identify as Jewtino!

Duke seniors Rebecca Edelman and Delaney Eisen discovered the power of Shabbat and the joy of sharing their Jewish identity when they hosted a Shabbat dinner in their home for 40+ friends. Focusing on the rich ethnic diversity within Judaism, they cooked for 3 days, preparing dishes representing cuisines from many Jewish communities around the globe. Supported by funding from , this gathering became more than just a meal; it was a powerful experience wrapped in the warmth of community.

On Wednesday, we welcomed family members of two hostages, Gadi Moshe Moses and Omri Miran who were taken hostage by Hamas on October 7, and remain captive in Gaza. Moshe Lavi, Omri’s brother-in-law, and Yair and Shani Finkelstein, Gadi’s son and granddaughter, shared their heartbreaking stories with our Duke community, calling on all of us to spread awareness of the hostage crisis so that that all the hostages may return to their families. We are so moved and grateful to have heard from Moshe, Yair, and Shani, and we pray for the safe return of all the hostages.🎗️

◾Gadi Moshe Moses, 79, was taken captive on October 7 from Kibbutz Nir Oz as he tried to bargain with Hamas terrorists who attacked the community. His daughter Doron and granddaughters Raz, 5, and Aviv, 2, were also taken captive. His partner, Efrat Katz, was presumed captive, as well, but her body was found several days later.
◾Omri Miran, 49, was taken captive on October 7 by Hamas terrorists from Kibbutz Nir Oz, leaving his wife, Lishay Miran, 38, and their two young daughters Roni, 2, and Alma, 6 months old.

Tonight we celebrate the eighth night of Hanukkah, lighting every candle on the chanukiyah so that it is fully illuminated. Our Duke community members on campus are invited to join us to mark the final night of Hanukkah at the Freeman Center with Rabbi Elana tonight at 5:30pm (and enjoy some 🍟 in honor of the custom of eating fried foods to represent the miracle of the ancient Temple’s small amount of oil burning for 8 days).

Wishing you all a chag sameach, and best of luck to our students taking final exams! 💙

What a joy to have Coach , Head Coach of and Honorary Head Mensch on campus, light the Hanukkah candles alongside Rabbi Elana Friedman and our Jewish student-athletes at the Freeman Center for Jewish Life last night.

Hate and bias have no place on Duke's campus. If you experience or observe a hate or bias incident on campus, follow these steps to submit a report.

Why report? Duke is committed to being a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all students, faculty, and staff. Fostering an inclusive climate includes *taking constructive action* if one witnesses or knows about behavior perceived to be inconsistent with the Duke Community Standard, which may include violation of university policies.

We were honored to be joined by Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the ADL (Anti-Defamation League), at our Advisory Board Meeting earlier this week. He spoke with our Director for Jewish Life Joyce Gordon about the rising antisemitism around the world and on college campuses, and ADL's work to counter hate and bias in all forms. At JLD, we have been working to support our community over the last month in a variety of ways including increased security, ongoing conversations with our colleagues and partners in the University administration, direct student support, coaching, and empowerment, prioritizing access to mental health resources, and fostering a sense of normalcy by continuing to lean into our Jewish observance and traditions like weekly Shabbat services and dinner, and much more.

Thank you to the many alumni, parents, and community members who continue to make this work possible with your philanthropic support. To make a donation visit: students.duke.edu/jewishlife/support
