Durham Nativity School

“Built for Boys” - The only all-boys 5th - 8th grade private middle school offering full-tuition scholarships in the Triangle.

We aim to help break the cycle of poverty through a quality middle school education that will help empower each child to reach their full potential. Durham Nativity School serves middle school boys who come from financially challenged (low income) families. The students should be able to thrive in a structured, academically challenging environment focused on the development of leadership skills an

d community service. The school provides the boys with emotional, social, moral and intellectual support through small classes, an extended day and a year-round program. We consider our mission to be an eleven year process with our students. Our faculty and staff work to help our students become young men ready for the rigors of college preparatory high schools and, consequently colleges. Our Board of Directors has also adopted a high school tuition assistance program that will allow us to continue supporting our graduates that attend a college preparatory high school that does not offer a full scholarship. This funding will ultimately become an endowment fund that will subsidize their high school education when needed. In addition, the DNS Volunteer/Graduate Support Coordinator will continue to follow each graduate’s progress throughout his high school and college years in order to further emphasize our commitment to our students. It is our ultimate desire to have our DNS graduates return and serve this community following their college graduation. Our administration will continue to put forth our eleven year commitment to our student’s parents and would urge them to recognize that process with their ongoing parental/guardian support of volunteerism. In the non-sectarian Nativity model our students are enrolled without regard to race, color, religion or ethnicity, but all must qualify for the federal meal program. Above all, the boys and their families must be committed to our rigorous schedule. The school is not tuition driven, but completely dependent on private donation. We require active parental involvement and hire faculty and staff fully dedicated to our mission. Durham Nativity School is educating boys who will break across barriers to become tomorrow’s leaders and role models within the community.

We're so grateful for our incredible board member and alumni grandparent, Ruby Tompkins!

Ruby’s supervisor was given four Duke basketball tickets by the President of Duke and chose her to receive them for her years of hard work and dedicated service at Duke. In the spirit of sharing, she gifted two tickets to our amazing social worker, Tyme Nunn, and DNS alum and current Ravenscroft student, Xavier.

This generous act exemplifies the power of mentorship and creating access to enriching experiences.

In photography club, the boys got to pick their own lightsaber-themed poses, and Yerik, our talented 7th grader, perfectly captured the moment of defeat.

At DNS, it’s all about offering diverse experiences and opening up a world of possibilities for our young men as they explore future careers! As we carry on our Friday tradition of community service and club activities, we’re committed to nurturing their passions and helping them grow. After all, we’re built for boys, and we’re excited to see them thrive!

About Durham Nativity School

Durham Nativity School provides a tuition-free, enriched learning environment and a twelve-year support system for middle school boys. Our students have the ability and commitment to achieve, but not the resources for a quality, independent school education. We promote a rigorous academic program and nurture the whole child to reach his potential through knowledge, moral values, learning skills, discipline, and character development. We instill the value of service for others as we build tomorrow’s role models and community leaders.

Durham Nativity School serves middle school boys who come from financially-challenged backgrounds. We provide a nurturing, but highly structured and academically challenging environment in which our students thrive. The school offers the students emotional, social, moral and intellectual support through small classes, an extended school day and school year program. We require active parental involvement and hire faculty and staff fully dedicated to our mission and students.

We consider our mission to be a twelve-year process with our students. It begins as they enter 5th grade at Durham Nativity and continues through their college experience. Our faculty and staff help our students become young men ready for the rigors of college-preparatory high schools and, consequently, colleges or universities.

As part of the twelve-year process, our Graduate Support program tracks each Durham Nativity graduate’s progress throughout high school and college. Our Board of Trustees has adopted a high school tuition-assistance program which allows us to provide some support to our graduates at college-preparatory high schools.

We enroll students without regard to race, color, religion or ethnicity, but all must come from financially-disadvantaged families or qualify for the National School Lunch Program. Above all, the boys and their families must be committed to our rigorous schedule and academics.

The Durham Nativity School is an independent, privately-funded middle school. It is not tuition driven, nor is it a charter or magnet school. We provide for our operating costs through individual, foundation, and corporate donations.

In 2002, Dr. and Mrs. Moylan founded the Durham Nativity School with a mission of providing a holistic learning experience for its students to become educated leaders and role models within the community.
