Durham Nativity School

Durham Nativity School We aim to help break the cycle of poverty through a quality middle school education that will help empower each child to reach their full potential.

Durham Nativity School serves middle school boys who come from financially challenged (low income) families. The students should be able to thrive in a structured, academically challenging environment focused on the development of leadership skills and community service. The school provides the boys with emotional, social, moral and intellectual support through small classes, an extended day and a year-round program. We consider our mission to be an eleven year process with our students. Our faculty and staff work to help our students become young men ready for the rigors of college preparatory high schools and, consequently colleges. Our Board of Directors has also adopted a high school tuition assistance program that will allow us to continue supporting our graduates that attend a college preparatory high school that does not offer a full scholarship. This funding will ultimately become an endowment fund that will subsidize their high school education when needed. In addition, the DNS Volunteer/Graduate Support Coordinator will continue to follow each graduate’s progress throughout his high school and college years in order to further emphasize our commitment to our students. It is our ultimate desire to have our DNS graduates return and serve this community following their college graduation. Our administration will continue to put forth our eleven year commitment to our student’s parents and would urge them to recognize that process with their ongoing parental/guardian support of volunteerism. In the non-sectarian Nativity model our students are enrolled without regard to race, color, religion or ethnicity, but all must qualify for the federal meal program. Above all, the boys and their families must be committed to our rigorous schedule. The school is not tuition driven, but completely dependent on private donation. We require active parental involvement and hire faculty and staff fully dedicated to our mission. Durham Nativity School is educating boys who will break across barriers to become tomorrow’s leaders and role models within the community.

Every morning starts with power, purpose, and brotherhood at Durham Nativity School.

Standing arm-in-arm in Morning Assembly, our students and staff recite the DNS Creed together, speaking strength, leadership, and academic excellence into existence before the first bell even rings. When our young men link arms with the mentors guiding their journey, positive affirmations turn into unbreakable character.

Words become actions. Actions become character. Brotherhood builds the future.

We left it all on the pitch yesterday at Trinity. Despite a tough 2-5 loss, our squad battled until the final whistle and showed true heart.

The highlight of the day…Seeing our Durham Nativity brotherhood in full effect. Massive thanks to DNS alumni Fernando (DNS ’26, Trinity ’30) and Anderson (DNS ’23, Trinity ’27) for coming out to support both teams.

Four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday) our students step up to the mic to share their voices with the school. What makes this year so special is how deeply our boys are leaning into vulnerability, choosing speech topics centered on their own personal areas of growth.

Case in point: Alex, an 8th grader who has been with us since 5th grade. This morning, he delivered an incredible speech on discipline, maturity, and what it truly means to strive to excel. Seeing his evolution over the last four years is a powerful reminder of what happens when we create a space where young men feel supported enough to reflect, grow, and lead.

We are so proud of Alex and every young man stepping up to the podium this year with such courage and self-awareness!

Every day our young men walk into classrooms built specifically for how boys learn best. Our phenomenal faculty makes that magic happen, from hands-on projects and spirited debates to building the confidence these future leaders need to thrive.

Representation matters deeply in the lives of our young men. Having a diverse team of educators and mentors means our students see their own potential reflected back at them every single day. Seeing leaders from various backgrounds, life experiences, and perspectives shows our young men that there are endless ways to lead with integrity, strength, and purpose.

Our teachers bring indispensable perspective, deep empathy, and rigorous instruction to our halls, ensuring every boy is fully seen, supported, and challenged to reach his highest potential.

To our entire faculty: thank you for bringing energy, passion, and purpose to our community!
