On behalf of the entire Durham Nativity School community, we would like to say thank you for all of the generous contributions received during Giving Tuesday. Your support is a true testament to your belief in our mission to provide a transformative educational experience.
Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that encourages people to come together to support causes they care about. This year, we were overwhelmed by the outpouring of generosity from our community. Thanks to all of our friends and supporters alike, we have unlocked a $50,000 matching gift and will be able to provide our students with the resources they need to succeed in school and life.
We are immensely grateful to everyone who was able to support us and help make Durham Nativity School a place where our students can reach their full potential and build a brotherhood for life.

Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to Dare to Dream Big!

Our mission is to help our students transform the Triangle, but we cannot do this alone. The only way to achieve this goal is by developing partnerships with community members who align with our mission, vision, and values.
Today, we reconnected with former DNS parent, James Abram, founder and owner of Jada's Men's Accessories, the only Black-owned haberdashery in the area, to form a new partnership. While his shop on Foster St in downtown Durham boasts an impressive collection of ties, bowties, scarves, and other accessories and his clientele includes local teams, TV anchors, and politicians, he is also on a mission to transform the Triangle through mentoring boys and young men.
We are excited for all that we will build, empower, and inspire!

This past week our 8th graders had the opportunity to visit Trinity School, as they begin to think about high school. During the visit they ran into two DNS alumni that are currently seniors at Trinity!

Distinctly DNS - Partnership with the Duke Department of Surgery
DNS increases access to opportunities that our students would otherwise not be able to experience.
Today, our seventh and eighth graders, along with Ms. Robinson, Ms. Hunter, and Ms. Alrefae, reconnected with a pre-COVID partner, Dr. Linda Cendales and Duke School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery to participate in the ASSET program. This program provides career mentorship and educational assistance to financially disadvantaged students. The Academic Success Through Surgical Education and Training (ASSET) program aims to foster high achievement in science through surgical education. The program focuses on empowerment, modeling, and career orientation, while providing anatomy, simulation, and surgical workshops throughout the year for students.
Thank you for the incredible opportunity, Dr. Cendales and the Duke Department of Surgery team!

We are happy to announce that we have joined forces with Central Park School for Children to create a neighborhood school partnership in Old North Durham. Every Monday, our 6th - 8th graders will walk over to CPSFC to work with their students and become their “big brothers”. Activities will range from reading to one another to playing outside on the playground. We are so grateful for this new friendship and how it will help us fulfill our creed as we build tomorrow’s role models and community leaders.

Our community, corporate, and foundation partners help us provide our students with access to unparalleled opportunities.
Last night, the Jenny Lillian Semans Koortbojian Trust, Spencer Hubbard (Jenny’s nephew and Duke bball player), and Duke University Athletics helped us celebrate a group of our students, who live our DNS Creed inside and outside of the classroom, by inviting us to join Duke’s Countdown to Craziness. It was a night to remember for all!
Thank you for your support!

It was a great afternoon of soccer with our team winning 2-1 against Carolina Friends.

A few great moments from yesterday's book fair. Many thanks to the volunteers, families, staff members, Takiri Folclor Latino, and Dj Mayor Morrison for coming out to make it a super fun day.

Six years ago, the Jenny Koortbojian Trust chose to partner with Durham Nativity School. Since 2018, their generous initial gift and continous support allow us to offer tution-free reading camps to more than 80 boys and girls of Durham.
Also, the Koortbojian Trust funds events for our families. This year we are grateful to host a book fair and open house with food, music, prizes and a stipend to buy books for DNS students and reading camp kids.
Join us this Sunday, 1 to 4pm at Durham Nativity School.

Throwback Thursday:
Our cross country team is on the move and getting faster with each race!

Six good reasons to come: Scholastic Books, music by Dj Mayor Morrison, performance by Takiri Folclor Latino (2pm), handmade pupusas, Ole NC BBQ Catering, and free books for children (thanks to Book Harvest). See you at our Book Fair and Open House!

Happy World Teachers’ Day to our incredible team!
Thank you for everything that you do to support our students and make our school the best it can be every single day!

Tiffany Alrefae, head of school, and Ruby Thompkins, DNS board member and alumni grandparent, enjoyed representing DNS at the Black Diamonds Night celebrating the opening of the Barrier Breakers exhibit.
“From Jackie to Pumpsie–1947-1959, "Barrier Breakers" is a traveling exhibit developed by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) in Kansas City, Missouri. It tells the important, but often overlooked story of the courageous players who integrated their respective Major League Baseball (MLB) teams from Jackie Robinson joining the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 through Elijah "Pumpsie" Green completing the integration cycle, 12 years later, with the Boston Red Sox.
Resilient Ventures, LLC is proud to present this amazing exhibition. As we pay tribute to these courageous trailblazers, we extend our deepest gratitude to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, from whom this exhibit originates and to our sponsors, whose support has made their stories of resilience and excellence directly accessible to us in our beloved Black Wall St. legacy city of Durham, NC. Together, we celebrate the triumph of equality and salute the enduring legacy of these pioneering athletes.”
You can visit the free exhibit in the Crowe building of the American To***co Campus until October 29, 2023.

Tis’ the season for high school fairs. Tonight, our eighth grade students and their families visited with local and out of state high school admissions representatives at the St. Timothy’s HS Fair in Raleigh.
We are so lucky to have Ms. QuRita Hunter as our Director of High School Placement and Graduate Support! She helps navigate the admissions and financial aid process from start to finish, ensuring that every young man finds their best fit school to continue their educational journey after graduating from DNS.

We collaborate with our community partners to provide our students with unique opportunities and unrivaled access to people, programs, and experiences. These opportunities provide windows and mirrors into possible career pathways because if you can see it, you can be it.
Yesterday, our eighth grade students took part in the Business of Software 2023 conference in Raleigh. They were also able to meet up with DNS friends, Bill Spruill (2ndF) and Carl Nassib (Rayze).
Thank you for the invitation, 2ndF!
