The Office of Black Church Studies, Duke University Divinity School

The Office of Black Church Studies, Duke University Divinity School Duke Divinity's research organ of Black religion, propelled by the prophetic witness of global Black Church traditions.

The Office of Black Church Studies leads Duke Divinity School in the great work of strengthening the body of Christ through critical reflection, dialogue, and praxis that is propelled by the prophetic witness of global Black Church traditions. OBCS supports the theological formation of all students who are informed and inspired by the rich history and traditions of the Black Church. OBCS is intentional in its efforts to affirm and assist seminarians and prospective students as they discern the call to minister in Afro-ecclesial contexts, and as they navigate the challenges and triumphs of theological education. In addition to offering support for students of African descent across ecumenical boundaries, the OBCS endeavors to foster an appreciation for the epistemic and prophetic distinctiveness of the black religious experience through the development of culturally significant curriculum, broad field education networks, events, and other learning opportunities.
