Kinda chic to improve roadway safety as part of the day-to-day work!

Tuesday's Road Safety 365 class focused on “reading the road” for safety opportunities. After a short classroom intro, we boarded the bus and rode the roads, practicing how to spot things like faded or blocked signs, pavement markings, curve conditions, skid marks and other clues that can help us identify and address risk. Then it was back to the classroom to talk through what we saw.

Roadway safety isn’t any one town’s “issue.” Fatal and serious crashes happen across New Hampshire- on state and local roads, in cities and small towns. Every DPW and highway staff member, in every community, can be part of saving lives by learning to read the road for safety and recognizing opportunities to make it safer through the work they already do.

Thank you to NH Department of Transportation for hosting us, and to the several New Hampshire communities that joined us for Road Safety 365 and brought their experience, observations and ideas to the conversation.

Congratulations to the Town of Salem, NH on receiving Municipal Green SnowPro Certification! Municipal Green SnowPro is a voluntary certification program that recognizes municipalities in the state that are working towards reducing their winter salt application and preventing increasing concentrations of chlorides in surface water and groundwater in their communities. Municipal Green SnowPro certification requires comprehensive training, detailed documentation, and winter salt reduction best management practices to improve water quality while maintaining a high level of public safety. Knowing your community is a little safer is even better.

The road you help make safer probably won't make the evening news. The crash that never happens won't make headlines. The families that travel your community’s roads safely probably won’t nominate you for a national award.

And that's exactly the point.

Road safety isn't about recognition. It's about coming together as a community to save lives, to help people get home safely, day after day.

Because some of the most important work is the work no one ever has to notice.

If you care about making rural and local roads safer, the NH Roads Scholar Road Safety Advocate Program can give you the knowledge, tools, and perspective to help make a difference.
