UNH T2 supports New Hampshire highway and public works teams with practical training, customized technical assistance, and resources.

As the state’s dedicated LTAP center, we help strengthen and maintain local roads. We're funded through NHDOT and FHWA. The New Hampshire Local Technical Assistance Program provides training and services concerning the technology and management of roads and bridges to municipal highway department officials. Our aim is to foster an understanding that continued training is important for municipal highway department employees.

Last week, we hosted our inaugural Public Works Intern Training Week, bringing together interns from across New Hampshire for an introduction to the infrastructure and services that support our communities every day.

Participants explored topics including Plan Reading, Pavement Maintenance, Asset Management & GIS, the Safe System Approach, MS4 & Stormwater Management, and Bridge and Steel basics, Workplace Safety. Along the way, they discussed how public works impacts community safety, mobility, environmental quality, and quality of life, the important role of public works professionals in sharing information, and how their work this summer will shape future infrastructure decisions.

We capped the week of with a site tour of the (under construction) Ocean Mapping Center of Excellence, hosted by Gilbane Building and University of New Hampshire Facilities.

Thank you to our instructors, partners, and participating agencies for helping make this pilot program a success!

Public Works makes it happen! From maintaining our roads to protecting local wildlife the Gilford Department of Public Works continues to go the extra mile to care for both their community and the environment. 🐢

🐢❤️ DPW Wildlife Watch! ❤️🐢

About a year ago, Tim Cutter from our Highway Department rescued an abandoned duckling and helped find it a new home.

Fast forward to today, and Sewer Technician Kevin Carlisle was driving through town when he spotted a snapping turtle laying her eggs along the roadside. Kevin pulled over, contacted the office, and together we reached out to NH Turtle Rescue.

Following their instructions, Kevin carefully coned off the area and installed protective mesh over the nest to help keep predators away while still allowing sunlight and rain to reach the eggs. We will continue working with the rescue organization and remove the protection when the time is right.

⚠️ Please do not disturb or touch the nesting area.

We love that our employees not only care about the work they do, but also about the wildlife that shares our beautiful community. Sometimes public service means helping our smallest residents too. 🦆🐢

This incident is an important reminder of why proper handling and disposal are critical to protecting workers, equipment, and our communities. Great job to the Nashua Solid Waste team for their quick thinking, this could have ended much worse.

We recently added a Lithium Battery Safety Tailgate Talk to our resource library. We encourage all teams to review it and stay vigilant. 🔗Link to the Tailgate Talk in the comments.
