Durham Boat Club, DBC Sculling School, Winter Cross-Training Activities - Some trails are Groomed as of 2/14/21.

Durham Boat Club runs its sculling recreational program from the Lamprey River location, which is not affected by the tides and uses the Oyster River Location for its smaller group of competitive scullers. The DBC Sculling School offers lessons on the Lamprey River to all interested in sculling from novices to accomplished competitors. In the winter and when weather permits trails are groomed for xc-skiing and are available to anyone in the community at no charge.

We were not able to get into our parking lot at the Durham Boat Company, Inc. as our snow plower had some technical difficulties. Our snowmobile has some difficulties laying down a track in deep snow as well. We spoke to a person from the Conservation Commission that volunteered to put trails into Dow Farm. I do not not know if has done that. As of Friday an Ice Fisherman said that there was 14 inches of ice on Oxbow Section of the Lamprey River and for the past couple of weeks people have been skating the into the main stretch. However beware of that stretch when the weather warms up later in the week. We have not seen any skiers or snowmobiles on the river as yet today.

Today is the first day of drawing water out of our reach of the Lamprey River to enable repair of the Macallen Dam and replace the gates. The drawdown, repair work in Newmarket and refilling of the river will take until the end of October.

This picture was tank April 25th of 2019 and this year we are not planning on having our dock installed until mid-June due to the Covid-19 problem. Anyone that paid dues on time will have this year's start date pushed back to our actual start date. We should be in good shape. At least we primarily focus on 1xs and Rec. 1xs. If any of the club members have any questions, please call on 603-659-7575. We are not doing any lesson or indoor activities as yet either.

Happy Holidays! The docks were taken out in Nov. and the and all the boats were moved inside at the same time. The first three pictures are showing ice and some snow in the oxbow section near the dock. The ice is not too thick yet about 4", please stay off the ice. The last picture is about 850 meters downstream showing open water where the main branch of the Lamprey River comes down from Packers Falls. Right after the Holidays, call to book times in the tank.

We had a few Milkweed plants growing in the front yard of our business and we were fortunate to get Monarch Butterflies to land on them and lay eggs last year. This year we had more Milkweed plants and Jean, our Butterfly keeper, counted 50 caterpillars in the larval stage of the Monarch. For more information on the 3,000-mile journey these butterflies make see, the link below: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/invertebrates/m/monarch-butterfly/

We are so sad about Notre-Dame Cathedral, where Jim and I visited after Jr. WRC in Vichy, France, where our Jr. 4x+ competed in 1983. We had two days in Paris for sightseeing and Notre-Dame was one of the highlights of our visit.
