More Than a School: A Movement for Change
Since our founding as a small summer pilot more than 20 years ago, OWLS has evolved from a local language program into a statewide advocate for cultural literacy. Our leadership team is dedicated to preparing the next generation of global citizens. We have a proven track record of meeting with local and national officials, such as Senator Jeanne Shaheen, to fight for the future of New Hampshire’s K-5 curriculum. This isn't just a project for us—it is a multi-year commitment to ensuring that world language is not an "extra," but a core part of every child’s education.

Finding Your Voice

At EmpowerHer, we focus on "Voice" and "Power". Through journaling and peer-led modules, girls learn to articulate their internal experiences and move from silence to self-advocacy. By designing their own community projects, they transition from passive recipients of support to active leaders who can effect tangible change in their environments.

The Science of Flourishing

Our EmpowerHer program for adolescent girls is more than a support group—it's a research-based intervention grounded in Positive Psychology. Using the PERMA framework (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment), we help girls move from "crisis management" to "preventative flourishing," significantly increasing their resilience.

What is Functional Fluency?

Our goal isn’t just to teach words; it’s to build functional fluency. This means our students—from age 3 through high school—develop the skills to communicate effectively when traveling abroad or engaging with native speakers right here in the U.S.
By using interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication, we ensure they are ready for real-world scenarios.

From Student to Teacher

Global citizenship is a family affair at OWLS! Board member Anita Mathur first joined us as a volunteer, and her daughter Maia grew up taking our Mandarin, Spanish, and French classes.
Today, Maia is a volunteer Teaching Assistant in our Spanish classes, helping a new generation of learners find their voices. We are so proud to see our students grow into leaders!

📢 Big news, Moharimet families and Durham neighbors! 📢

We are so excited to announce that we will be part of Durham Day on Thursday, August 6th! This year we will be highlighting our Chinese classes at Moharimet Elementary.

Come on down and welcome our new Chinese teacher, Yu Ying Chen, who will be hosting our booth alongside a very special dragon friend.

Here is what we have planned for the day: Dragon Introductions: Learn how to introduce yourself to our dragon! Kids are highly encouraged to bring their favorite stuffed animal friend along to introduce to us, too. Storytime & Crafts: Hear the traditional story of the dragon Nian and create a fun craft to take home. Chopstick Game: Test your skills with a fun, interactive chopstick challenge.

This is a fantastic opportunity to meet Yu Ying, learn more about our language program, and have some summer fun. We can't wait to see you and your stuffed animal sidekicks there! 🐉🥢
