Today, we celebrate a new class of Durham Tech paramedics—and on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, their achievement carries a particularly special meaning.

Twenty-five years ago, we witnessed police officers, firefighters and paramedics run toward the unimaginable to help others.

Now we honor that same spirit in those who choose first response as their profession.

We remember those we lost on 9/11 and the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice. We also salute the graduates who are now prepared to answer the call when others need help most.

We are grateful for Michael and the great things he is doing with the Newton Makerspace!

🛠 Meet Michael Mattox, Durham Tech’s new full-time manager of the Newton Makerspace!

Michael is no stranger to Durham Tech. For the past several years, he managed the Makerspace part-time, helping students and employees turn ideas into real-world creations. Thanks to the College’s commitment and the generosity of a donor who recognized the potential of the Makerspace, Michael has officially joined the College full time, expanding the capacity of the Makerspace and the opportunities it can offer our students.

Located in the George W. Newton Industrial and Engineering Technologies Center, the Newton Makerspace is a high-tech space for student innovation, exploration, and hands-on learning. Equipped with tools including 3D printers, laser engravers, sewing machines, CNC equipment, and power tools, the Makerspace gives students across disciplines opportunities to learn new skills, experiment, and bring their ideas to life.

Michael is especially well suited to lead its next chapter. A professional bladesmith and the founder and owner of Mattox Knives, he brings a maker’s curiosity and a wide range of technical and creative skills to his work. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Alabama.

Congratulations, Michael! We can’t wait to see what you—and our students—create next. 🛠️💡

Celebrating an exciting first and third with this apprenticeship signing. 👏

We’re proud to celebrate the first cohort of students completing apprenticeships with AstraZeneca for Maintenance Technician and Laboratory Science, as well as the third cohort completing apprenticeships with WakeMed Health & Hospitals for Surgical Technology.

These students are doing more than completing their coursework—they’re gaining valuable, hands-on experience in their chosen fields and building the skills and confidence they need to take the next step into the workforce. Great work!

Great work, Marcus! 👏 A perfect example of the talent coming from Durham Tech Public Safety

From the Classroom to the Career 🚒🔥

One of the best parts of public safety education is watching students take what they learn in the classroom and turn it into a career.

Marcus Crawley recently graduated from Durham Tech’s AAS in Public Safety Administration and this month completed the Chapel Hill Fire Department’s lateral hire academy, becoming a full-time firefighter with the Town of Chapel Hill.

This week, Marcus was back on the fireground for a controlled training burn alongside Blake Whitt, Durham Tech’s Director of Public Safety Training Programs and Chief of Hurdle Mills VFD, where Marcus serves as a volunteer.

It’s a great example of the relationships built between students and instructors who are also working in the field. The classroom may be where the education starts, but the relationships and experience extend well beyond it.

Proud of you, Marcus! 🔥🚒
