⭐️Last Thursday we had our Student Government Election! Students gathered in the auditorium to hear their candidates speeches for representing the student body. Students enjoyed Election trivia and having a Q&A with the candidates before they casted their vote.

✨Students visited our partner organization Bull City Workshop to get an introduction to woodworking. Students learned how to work safely in the woodshop, measure, and use handsaws and the drill press to build a plant propagation station. This was a part of our new STEAM enrichment class and included 5th, 6th and 7th grade scholars. ✨

✨This past Monday, all the Maureen Joy middle schoolers packed into the auditorium for the first-ever Maureen Joy Book Awards ceremony. After voting for the nominees, students cheered as they heard the winners in categories like “Funniest Book,” “Best Science Fiction or Fantasy Book,” and “Best Protagonist.” It was very loud, but also very fun!✨

✨We asked our board members to share their favorite aim from our Portrait of a Learner, and we’re excited to showcase their responses. A Portrait of a Learner represents our vision for the skills and qualities that Joy prepares young people to embody. The portrait names what we want to be true for our students by the time they graduate from 8th grade and provides a vision for the kinds of people they will become through their experience at Joy.

Our aims—agile, creative, critically conscious, and collaborative—are the foundation of this vision, guiding every step of our students’ journey. Get to know our board and their favorite aims shaping the future of our students!✨

Out of an abundance of caution due to the impending effects of Hurricane Helene, Maureen Joy will be closed on Friday, September 27. We will review our school calendar to identify make-up days for missed instructional time. Please stay safe during the storm!

Maureen Joy Charter is thinking differently about how we do school to ensure that all young people have access to powerful, joyful learning. We created our Portrait to embrace the full spectrum of our students’ genius and potential. The Portrait names what we want to be true for young people by the time they graduate from Joy.

Our HVAC system has been working efficiently and we will have a full day of school on Friday, August 30, 2024. Dismissal will begin at 3:15pm in the car lane and buses will depart at 3:45pm. Expect your students at their bus stops at their regular designated times.
