What an AMAZING turn out for our Annual African American Read-in! I want to thank the NCCU Football team for showing up in a big way! Our students were so excited to see the team and they truly made an impact. The Hillside High School AVID students were amazing and have supported Parkwood every year. Thank you to our district staff, Deputy Superintendent, board members, commissioners and community partners for volunteering their time and making the event the BEST one yet!!!

This week, Parkwood has really felt the love from Bright City Church! We had an amazing group of volunteers paint two sets of student bathrooms last weekend, and they provided our staff lunch twice this week! We are incredibly grateful for their community partnership and investment in our Parkwood family. A big thank you to Dorothy at Bright City Church for organizing these events!

Tomorrow is Meet the Admin Team night at Parkwood! Please join us anytime between 6-7pm in the Media Center. We are looking forward to connecting with our families and our community! Light refreshments will be provided, too!

Hello Parkwood Families!
I am so excited to welcome all of our Parkwood Panther families back to campus for our first day of school on Monday August 29th! I am even more excited that I get to welcome back all our amazing families as the new principal and alongside my wonderful assistant principal Kathleen Carswell! We are extremely grateful for this opportunity and we do not take for granted that you have entrusted us with your most precious possession every day! We are looking forward to serving all of our amazing families and know it will be a year full of joy and PRIDE. The beginning of school can be overwhelming with all of the new information being communicated, so I wanted to send you all the following information as early as possible to best help you plan.
Kindergarten Camp: The Kindergarten teachers and administrators at Parkwood are so excited about the newest additions to our school family! In order to make the transition into “big school” a little easier, we have outlined the following schedule of events that will kick off the 2022-2023 school year. We feel confident this will assist your child to make a smooth transition into Kindergarten. This information has been posted on our website and page, so if you visit either place, you can still access this information.

Information Sessions: August 17th at Parkwood from 5pm to 6pm in the Media Center.
1st Session: 5pm to 5:30pm
2nd Session: 5:30pm to 6pm

During the sessions, the Kindergarten team we will discuss what they will be doing during the pre-screening, how the classes will be formed and what you can expect the first week of school. Pre-screening will take place Thursday, August 18th and Friday, August 19th. If you did not receive an email or letter in the mail, you can sign up for your child’s time slot for pre-screening using the QR code or via this link. You can also go to our Parkwood website and Facebook to access the link. You will choose one day/time to bring your child in for pre-screening. Anyone who does not complete the sign-up will be able to choose from the available time slots during the information session on August 17th. Please make every attempt to attend one of the sessions so you will be informed about the beginning of the year! Please refer to our Kindergarten Staggered Entry Letter for more information.

Open House: Our Meet the Teacher Open House event will take place at Parkwood on Thursday August 25 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. This will be an opportunity for families to have a brief meet and greet conversation with your child’s teacher, get important school information (i.e. bus assignments) and join our awesome PTA.
Masks are optional but highly recommended and Open House presentations will be shared on our website for those families who are unable to attend.
Transportation: All families who would like bus transportation for their child need to make sure that the address in the PowerSchool Parent Portal is correct and that you have selected bus transportation for the year. If any changes need to be made, please do so prior to August 8 so that we can make sure that your child has bus transportation for the first day of school. If this information is not updated by August 8, it can take up to 14 days after the start of school to arrange bus transportation for your child. Transportation will be very important to update to ensure that your child has a bus assigned on the first day of school!
Teacher Assignments: Teacher Assignments will be available via the PowerSchool Parent Portal on Thursday August 25, with the exception of our Kindergarten students (please review the Kindergarten Staggered Entry Letter for more information). It is imperative that families check Parent Portal prior to their arrival to Open House so that they will know their child’s teacher.

Teacher Appreciation Week, May 2-6, 2022
There’s so much we can say about teachers and all of the good they represent and do, but what do we say to them? Two simply heartfelt words come to mind. Thank you. For doing front-line work that requires courage, humility, passion, and selflessness. For preparing our young people for life beyond the classroom. For influencing the lives of thousands of students who leave your classrooms and become contributing members of society. Durham Public Schools is beyond grateful.

During this holiday break many places across the country, including Durham, saw a rapid increase in COVID cases. One of the best ways to prevent the spread is rapid COVID testing.

DPS offers free COVID testing to all students and DPS staff through its partnership with MAKO Medical. This includes both weekly surveillance testing as well as rapid diagnostic testing when available. However, students MUST be registered to participate. To sign up, families can visit the DPS COVID-19 Website by following the link below, click your child’s school, and fill out the registration form.

Family members needing to be tested can visit the COVID-19 webpage to find a list of county testing locations.

Hello Parkwood Community,

Don’t forget that this Wednesday, December 8 is an early release day. School will be dismissed at 12:15pm and all car riders must be picked up by 12:45pm.

Tomorrow, Monday December 6, we will begin administering our middle of year benchmark tests in literacy, math, and science (5th grade only) for our students in grades 3-5. These benchmarks will not affect report card or progress report grades; they are a great piece of data for teachers to adjust instruction to best meet the needs of our students. Here is the testing schedule for benchmarks. If you have questions about the schedule or testing in general, please reach out to your child’s teacher:

Monday December 6: 4th Grade Math
Tuesday December 7: 3rd Grade Math
Wednesday December 8: 3rd Grade Reading and 5th Grade Math
Thursday December 9: 4th Grade Reading
Friday December 10: 5th Grade Science
Monday December 13: 5th Grade Reading

Our December School Improvement Team meeting will take place at 3pm on Monday December 6. SIT meetings are open to all Parkwood families; if you would like to attend, please email me ([email protected]) for the Zoom link.

Many of you have been waiting for school pictures – the time is here! School pictures will be taken this Friday December 10 for all students. Your child’s homeroom teacher will send information home this week in regards to ordering pictures.

It is not too late to register your child for weekly COVID-19 surveillance testing at Parkwood. Given the increase in cases and the new variant, I highly encourage everyone to register their student for COVID-19 testing on campus. You will be able to register your child throughout the school year using this link: If you need to remove your child from weekly surveillance testing, please email me at [email protected].

I cannot believe it, but Winter Break is right around the corner! Campus will be closed to all students from Monday December 20-Monday January 3. School will resume for students on Tuesday January 4. In order to fully rest and relax during Winter Break, Parkwood staff members will not be available via Dojo or email during the entirety of the break.

Thank you for reading and remember – Parkwood Panthers show PRIDE!
