At the Duke Canine Cognition Center, we strive to make our online presence as positive as possible. However, we also feel it is important to use our platform to bring attention to causes we care about.

As many of you know, a mysterious canine illness is circulating throughout the country. Our DCCC community was directly affected by the loss of Apex, a sweet and gentle five-month-old puppy from Canine Companions. We had the pleasure of seeing him grow from a little pale ball of fluff into a handsome, smart puppy with eyes so striking he looked as if he was constantly wearing eyeliner.

Apex was diagnosed with pneumonia on Sunday, 11/19. He went home with antibiotics but did not improve. His raisers then took him to NC State, one of the best vet schools in the country. By Tuesday afternoon, he was placed on oxygen, then a ventilator. Even though he received the best possible care, he was, tragically, not able to pull through.

From all of us at Duke, we offer our most heartfelt condolences and support to all those who loved Apex, especially his puppy raisers.

Apex's raiser, Margot Roth Bennett, writes children's books telling the stories of the service dogs she has raised. All proceeds from her book, "Ely, Life as a Service Dog," will be dedicated to Canine Companions in Apex's honor.

If you are interested in contributing, you can purchase the book through Amazon( https://www.amazon.com/Ely-Life-Service-Dog-Puppy/dp/1735799041/ ) or directly from Margot at [email protected].

Whether through your donations or simply holding your dogs a little tighter and keeping them safe, we hope you honor Apex's memory.
