Today, my lab team participated in the Mississippi State Fair, where we showcased our ongoing research and extension activities in horticulture and sustainable crop production. Our exhibits highlighted alternative and speciality crops, including turmeric, ginger, and stevia, with a special focus on plant disease diagnosis, pest management, and sustainable production practices. It was a wonderful opportunity to interact with farmers, families, students, and visitors, share research-based knowledge, and inspire the next generation of agricultural scientists!

Participated in the Model Farm Field Day, where I had the opportunity to talk with farmers, agricultural professionals, and community members and demonstrate modern crop production practices and technologies. The hands-on sessions highlighted innovative approaches to vegetable production, greenhouse and protected cultivation, plant health management, and sustainable crop production. A great day of learning, sharing, and connecting research and Extension with our farming communities!

Today, we visited watermelon and cantaloupe fields to assess crop health and disease symptoms. We observed several rotting fruits showing signs of potential Sclerotium infection. Field scouting combined with laboratory confirmation is essential for developing effective, sustainable disease-management strategies. Reducing prolonged soil and fruit moisture and limiting fruit-to-soil contact can also help reduce disease pressure.
