Families are invited to join Book Harvest, Kids Voting Durham, and City of Durham, NC Government Mayor ProTem Javiera Cabellero for “Storytime at City Hall” Families can hear a voting story and take the book home with them from Book Harvest, participate in Kids Voting activities, and get a personal tour of City Hall from the Mayor ProTem herself!

Monday, August 17 at 6 pm at Durham City Hall (101 City Hall Plaza)

55 years ago today, young people made history.

On July 1, 1971, the 26th Amendment became part of the U.S. Constitution, lowering the voting age from 21 to 18. But this victory didn't happen overnight—it happened because young people spoke up, organized, and demanded a voice in the decisions shaping their future.

Their message was simple: If we're old enough to serve our country, we're old enough to vote.

The 26th Amendment is a powerful reminder that young people have always been drivers of change. Their advocacy transformed our democracy, and their voices continue to shape our communities today.

As we celebrate this milestone, let's honor the young leaders who fought for the right to vote—and continue creating opportunities for the next generation to learn, lead, and participate in civic life.

Youth voices matter. They always have. They always will.
