Humans and Autonomy Laboratory The Human Autonomy Lab newly located at Duke University focuses on the interactions of humans and computer decision-making with embedded autonomy.

Research in Duke University's Humans and Autonomy Lab (HAL*) focuses on the multifaceted interactions of human and computer decision-making in complex sociotechnical systems with embedded autonomy. Given the explosion of autonomous technology in aviation, medicine, and even in everyday mundane environments like driving, the need for humans as supervisors of and collaborators in complex autonomous control systems has replaced the need for humans in direct manual control. Instead of relying on humans for well-rehearsed skill ex*****on and rule following that requires significant practice and memorization (and subject to problems such as fatigue and boredom), autonomous systems need humans for their more abstract levels of knowledge synthesis, judgment, and reasoning. Autonomous systems today, and even more so in the future, require coordination and teamwork for mutual support between humans and machines for both improved system safety and performance.

HAL is looking forward to hosting the first annual Duke Robotics Symposium for students and faculty this weekend! The Symposium will open with welcoming remarks from Amazon Robotics, followed by short presentations from Duke Robotics and other Triangle area robotics faculty about current research. The rest of the day will be dedicated to short Ted-style talks from university students all around the Triangle area with an interest in robotics. Topics could include mobility and manipulation, perception, planning and optimization, human robot interaction, applications of robotics, field studies, and the legal and social implications of robotic systems. Congrats to Dr. Cummings for winning the prestigious Nevada medal for her research in unmanned aerial systems. HAL is so proud!

The newest winner of a prestigious scientific award at Nevada's Desert Research Institute is a former military pilot and pioneer in the research of drones who was told a decade ago she was wasting her time studying unmanned aerial systems.
