The Innovation Project Announces Scholarships for
Aspiring Principals in Small Districts

The Innovation Project (TIP) announced over $1.5M in scholarships designed to prepare educators to extend excellent leadership in North Carolina's high-need and small school districts. The program covers the full cost of the two year Masters program and salary for participants to serve in their second year as principal interns. Tuition scholarship funding is provided through a grant to The Innovation Project from the U.S. Department of Education. Funding to cover salary costs for participants in year two is through a NC Department of Public Instruction program.

TIP in partnership with North Carolina Central University (NCCU) and the NCCU
School of Education, hosted orientation this week for the first cohort of the
Recruitment, Retention and Promotion of Effective Educators (RRP) scholarship
initiative. Sixteen outstanding educators from eight TIP member districts are
enrolling now in the Master of School Administration (MSA) graduate degree
program at NCCU. The program prepares them to serve as Principals and allows for educators to stay in the classroom during their first year, and then to be employed full-time as Principal Interns during year two.

The RRP Scholarship Program aims to bolster the school leader pipeline and open
career pathways for outstanding teachers. District leaders nominated candidates
who applied to the program and then participated in rigorous group interviews
designed to identify those with the strongest leadership potential and aptitude. The inaugural class includes the following 16 scholarship recipients:
➔ Cecelia Aguilar, Warren County School District
➔ Trevor Beverly, Lexington City Schools
➔ James Brown, Warren County School District
➔ Qua'Shana Brown, Edgecombe County Public Schools
➔ Sylvia Carver, Elizabeth City - Pasquotank Public Schools
➔ Wilonda Gillespie-Cates, Vance County Public Schools
➔ J'Vonn Davis, Elizabeth City - Pasquotank Public Schools
➔ Megan Gentry, Mt. Airy School District
➔ Pamela Jordan, Warren County School District
➔ Ashley Knowles, Sampson County Schools
➔ Brandon Powell, Sampson County Schools
➔ Jennivise Lindsay, Vance County Public Schools
➔ Kenya Raynor, Edgecombe County Public Schools
➔ Elaine Reales, Mt. Airy School District
➔ West Scherer, Asheboro City Schools
➔ Danielle Wissner, Elizabeth City - Pasquotank Public Schools

"With strong support, great teachers can become great principals. North Carolina
Central University has been the perfect partner to help TIP build this program," said Dr. Sharon Contreras, CEO of TIP. "The interview process was especially dynamic and illuminated those candidates with the potential to do the work our students need and deserve. I’m thrilled with the outcome and I look forward to seeing these professionals advance in their careers and continue to serve in smaller districts.“

"This partnership underscores our shared dedication to advancing educational
equity and excellence and preparing our aspiring leaders to lead with integrity,
purpose, and through innovation," said Dr. Portia Gibbs-Roseboro, MSA Program
Director of NCCU.

Participants in the program will be prepared to meet diverse student and
community needs and learn to leverage transformative management practices to
lead NC schools. Recipients commit to a five-year service obligation, ensuring their continued impact within North Carolina’s educational landscape.

---

The Innovation Project (TIP) is a dynamic, interactive education community
dedicated to student excellence by reimagining education, rethinking the
classroom, and redesigning curriculum. Comprised of 23 public school districts from across North Carolina, TIP’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for change through collaborative partnerships, pioneering initiatives, and a drive to shape the future of education. Website: www.tipnc.org.

On August 1st, we hosted a group of campers affiliated with the School of Education at UNC-Wilmington.

Before coming to visit NCCU, they spent a week in an Ocean Solutions camp learning about possible ocean-related professions.

After visiting NCCU, they were off to the Kennedy Space Center to learn about space-related professions. They then toured the University of Central Florida.

Title: Sea Beyond

Purpose:
This intensive afterschool and college preparatory program will inspire young people to learn. Focusing on three fundamental principles, the camp will be designed to enhance opportunity and cultivate curiosity of rising ninth graders. By the end of the camp, students will have:

- Examined persistent global problems.
- Evaluated varied responses to persistent global problems.
- Designed potential solutions to one persistent global problem facing their generation.

About the School of Education

The North Carolina Central University School of Education began in 1925 as a collection of courses intended to train black teachers and principals to work in the racially segregated school system of the Jim Crow South. It became a department in the College of Liberal Arts in 1928 and a full-fledged school in 1989. The School of Education moved to its present facility in August 2000. The 109,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility boasts full wireless capability, a teleconference classroom, Technology Enhanced classrooms, 350-seat smart auditorium, speech and hearing clinic, and communications and technology laboratories. The building was named in honor of North Carolina House Representative H.M. Michaux, Jr., in 2007.

In fall 2011, 43 full-time faculty taught 177 undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in elementary or middle grades education. Another 400 students were seeking licensure in teaching as well. There were 357 graduate students enrolled in a broad array of licensure and master's degree offerings. NCCU provides graduate curricula in elementary or middle grades education but also educational technology; school administration; community, career or school counseling; communication disorders; and five concentrations in special education. All programs are fully accredited by their respective bodies.
