AI Innovator: Carla Greco
North Carolina Cyber Academy Middle School teacher Carlo Greco used AI for warm up activities, brainstorming sessions, and guided skill-building this school year!
“I've used Snorkl, Canva, and SchoolAI. In Canva, students have used the image and voice generator to design stories and settings,” she explained. “For Snorkl, I use it as my first entry point into our day's lesson, concurrently building motivation and scaffolding to the next lesson step. Students use it to respond to a critical thinking question, literature, or modeled writing. I've used SchoolAI to create spaces that identify prior knowledge, reinforce or teach new skills, then encourage evaluation and synthesis - all adaptively.”
“On my end, I am able to get feedback from the tool on how a student is responding; it shares challenges and strengths,” Mrs. Greco added. “While students often express a negative view of AI, I think these tools are showing them how to build on their own ideas. I think they are realizing the differences between using AI as a tool versus having it complete work. I believe students want to create original work but with so much available, they really don't always know what is copying or not. This practice is showing them what guided support from AI looks like.”
“Additionally, they are engaged and getting targeted, real time, individual feedback so they seem to know where to focus more. This is especially true with Snorkl, where they are also motivated by getting the AI to mark their work with a higher score.”
Below are more details about the specific individual and group projects Mrs. Greco’s students have been working on using AI tools this semester!
