Theatre At Southeastern Presents The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow
The theatre program at Southeastern Oklahoma State University has announced the release of a radio drama of the classic tale, “The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.” “Sleepy Hollow is one of number of productions in this year’s Starlight Radio Theatre Series. It has been a blast to bring this tale to life and we can’t wait for everyone to hear,” said SE Director of Theatre Dell McLain.
Under the direction of Dell McLain, audio engineer Kelly Rhoads, and stage manager Heaven Williams, the Theatre Department at Southeastern has spent many weeks preparing the show. This version of “The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow” is a radio drama rendition of the classic Washington Irving short story.
Adapted by Anthony E. Palermo, students have worked long hours to bring these spooky characters to life with their voices and the atmosphere of Sleepy Hollow being created with fantastic sound design. “Playing not one, but two different antagonists has been an amazing experience,” says Raden Phillips on voicing Brom Van Brunt and the Headless Horseman, “Changing from one character who the audience loves to hate to a character that fills people will fear is a really fun dynamic.”
McLain added, “This season has presented a number of challenges for the performing arts here at Southeastern and across the nation. We’ve had to be creative in order to provide performance and design opportunities for our students, and programming for our community. Most don’t realize that our ticket sales each year go to support our program and provide scholarships to students. At the same time we pay rights and royalties to license these productions that we present. I am asking our friends, instead of ticket purchases for these digital productions, if you would consider calling our theatre office and arrange for a small donation to the theatre program to help us pay for the productions and assist students with much needed scholarships. I hope you will consider calling our Theatre secretary Lisa McDanel at (580) 745-2735 to arrange your donation to our season. There is no gift too small to make a big impact.”

Theatre At Southeastern announces release of exciting short film
The theatre program at Southeastern Oklahoma State University announces the release of the new short film entitled “Suffrage,” celebrating the centennial of the passage of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. A joint project between Southeastern’s Theatre and Broadcasting programs, the cast and crew have worked many weeks to write and film this devised theatre project. “I am so excited to share this creative project with our community, the students worked hard on ‘Suffrage’ and it truly shows through their creativity,” says director Dell McLain.
“Suffrage” looks at the broad topic of voter rights through the eyes of real-life Oklahoma suffragist Aloysius Larch-Miller. Miller died in 1920 only hours after ensuring that the Oklahoma legislature voted to ratify the important 19th amendment. The film also includes actor’s renderings of famous speeches on the topic of voter rights, interviews with average young women, and meetings with contemporary activists. “Filming ‘Suffrage’ was amazing. It was really eye-opening to research all of these strong empowering women and having to write from a point of view opposite to mine,” says Olivia Wilson, who plays a young woman being interviewed.
With costumes by Prof. Kathleen Hardgrove, scenery by Derek Coker, lighting by Heaven Williams, sound by Kelly Rhoads, and stage management by Kat Weightman the department has put enormous effort into the project. The show is part one in a two-part series of plays involving the character Aloysius Larch-Miller. "Legacy" will be a small touring production more specifically focused on Miller, her life, work and impact on Oklahoma history, and will premier spring of 2021.
“Suffrage” is a filmed theatrical event launching today, Friday, October 9 on Theatre at Southeastern’s Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theatreatse/ and YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2Sa2WP_x3UcEaCpTnuESLA.
