Southeastern Oklahoma State University first opened its doors to students on June 14, 1909, as Southeastern State Normal School, to educate teachers for Oklahoma's public schools. The school's first sessions were held in temporary quarters until 1910 when the Normal School building, later called Morrison Hall, was constructed in a peach orchard. In 1921, the institution became a four-year college

Exciting times ahead at Southeastern! 🎉 We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. David Whitlock as interim president starting August 1. His passion for SE and strong leadership makes this a great moment for our university!

🗞️NEWS: The Regional University System of Oklahoma (RUSO) has named Dr. David Whitlock as interim president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University, effective August 1, 2025.

Whitlock succeeds Dr. Thomas W. Newsom, who was recently announced as the next president at Pittsburg State University in Kansas. Newsom served as Southeastern’s 21st president from the spring of 2020.

“I am excited to have Dr. Whitlock serve in this interim role,” said Jane McDermott, chair of the RUSO Board of Regents. “His professional background, combined with his deep love for his alma mater, makes him the perfect fit for this position.
