Welcome to Washington Irving, Mr. Recer! ❤️💙🦁💙❤️
We are thrilled to announce that Josh Recer has been hired today as our new Principal at Washington Irving Elementary School!

Mr. Recer brings over 30 years of dedicated experience in education, including teaching, campus leadership, and district administration. He is a proven collaborative leader with a strong track record of improving student achievement, staff morale, and school culture.
Highlights of Mr. Recer’s Background:
Current Role: Special Education Teacher at Durant Middle School.
Recent Leadership: Served as High School Principal at Leonard ISD (2022–2024), where he played a key role in elevating the campus from a C to an A rating by the Texas Education Agency. He improved teacher/staff morale, strengthened student discipline/accountability, and streamlined communication.
District-Level Experience: Assistant Superintendent at Pottsboro ISD (2014–2022), overseeing Human Resources, Special Education/504, Federal Programs, Transportation, Maintenance, Budget, and more. Named 2021-22 Faculty/Staff Member of the Year.
Campus Leadership: Multiple years as High School and Middle School Principal and Assistant Principal
Teaching: Began his career as a Special Education Teacher
He is known for his student-centered approach, strong communication skills, and ability to build positive relationships with staff, students, families, and the community. His experience spans both special education and general education, giving him a well-rounded perspective that will serve our elementary students and staff exceptionally well.

For our May Character Strong trait, we participated in the Kindness Closeout! We are ending the school year on a kind note, and these students truly embraced the challenge through their actions, attitudes, and care for others.
These students are our May Principal Paw Award winners! We are so proud of the kindness they showed throughout the month and the positive impact they made on our school. Congratulations! 🐾❤️

As we finish out the school year, let’s recognize our May Kiwanis Terrific Kids recipients! These students were chosen for consistently displaying the characteristics that make up TERRIFIC: Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive, and Capable.
We are so proud of each of these students and the positive example they set for others every day. Congratulations to our May Terrific Kids! 🎉
