🎬 What does the Sundance Film Festival, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, Adobe and Sony Pictures have to do with students in Durango? Potentially, quite a lot.

💰 A new $250,000 state grant will help connect Durango School District’s creative Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs with professionals and organizations shaping some of the nation’s biggest creative industries. This can open doors that can be harder to access when you’re growing up hundreds of miles from a major industry hub.

Through Creative Educators Network, DSD teachers will tap into relationships with organizations including Adobe, Warner Bros. Discovery, The Walt Disney Company, Sony Pictures, Dolby and Avid. This will bring current industry knowledge, connections and opportunities back to students in Southwest Colorado.

And with the Sundance Film Festival moving to Boulder in 2027, the timing couldn’t be better. 🎥✨

For students interested in fashion, digital media, graphic design, filmmaking, business, multimedia production, set design and more, this is about turning creative talent into real career pathways. Our geography won't limit what they can imagine or who they can learn from.

A $250,000 state grant will strengthen career-connected learning in digital media, graphic design, fashion design, business and construction trades.

🤖 Durango High School students recently led a hands-on robotics summer camp to introduce 6th- through 9th-grade students to engineering and to inspire future STEM leaders.

The main objective of the camp was for small student teams to design and build a FIRST Tech Challenge "starter bot." The completed robots were designed to launch large wiffle balls into a scoring chamber, similar to playing a game of robotic basketball. 🖥️ 🛠️

👋 It’s Meet Us Monday! 👋

This week, we are excited to introduce Mark Arnold, an IT Tech for Durango School District! Mark stays busy supporting the technology needs of our staff and students across three different campuses: Animas Valley Elementary, Park Elementary, and Miller Middle School. 💻✨

🚴‍♂️ When he's off the clock, Mark loves to get outside and enjoy the best of Durango! Like many in our community, he is an avid mountain biker. Recently, he has also picked up disc golf — a fun nod to his childhood days of playing Frisbee — and has been super enjoying his time out on the course. 🥏

Thank you, Mark, for keeping our schools connected and running smoothly every day! 💙

Every child attending a DSD school or childcare facility must have a complete immunization record or exemption submitted to their school, or the child will be unable to attend school until they are compliant with this state law. The immunization record must be from the child's healthcare provider or other immunization provider, and must show that the child is up-to-date on all school-required vaccines, according to their age.

If you plan to have a Certificate of Nonmedical Exemption for your child, please note that the date of the exemption must be on or after July 1, 2026, for the 2026-27 school year.

Note: Starting in the 2026-27 school year, Colorado law will require students to have one dose of Tdap vaccine before their first day of seventh grade.

🎓🦋 Eighth graders at Miller Middle School shared their Portrait of a Graduate capstones today, reflecting on how much they’ve grown during their middle school years before heading off to high school.

One powerful presentation came from Maddie Martin, who used the metaphor of a butterfly to describe her own transformation through the Portrait of a Graduate competencies. From recovering after a skiing accident as a Resilient Risk-Taker, to learning patience on a joint school project as an Empathetic Collaborator, to guiding younger students as a Confident Communicator and WEB Leader (We All Belong), her reflections showed real growth and self-awareness.

One of her quotes especially stayed with us:
“Change doesn’t always come at the right time, and growth doesn’t happen when I’m comfortable.”

Moments like these are a reminder that Portrait of a Graduate is more than a framework — it’s becoming part of how our students see themselves, face challenges, and prepare for what’s next.
