🥔🌻 Growing greener, one garden bed at a time! Students at Animas Valley Elementary School are putting sustainability into action! With help from their student Green Team and special guest Jerry Zink, AVE transformed its school garden to conserve water, grow fresh food, and inspire young gardeners.

The school celebrated its first-ever Garden Harvest Day last month by bringing students, families, and community members together to harvest, cook, and enjoy the fruits (and veggies!) of their labor. From homegrown potatoes to freshly made kale chips, this was hands-on learning at its finest! 🌱

From pinch pots and slab rolling to throwing on the wheel, students in Kayleigh Weir’s Beginning Ceramics class at Durango High School are mastering fundamental art techniques! 🎨

This semester, students will complete three core hand-building projects — pinch pots, slab boxes, and coil vases — along with a two-week rotation learning how to throw on the wheel. Once students master these foundational methods, they get the opportunity to create custom, self-directed projects of their own choosing.

Right now, students are busy applying intricate glazes to finish up their slab-built box creations.

Ms. Weir, who is in her fifth year at DHS, also teaches Beginning Jewelry, where students learn to work in metal, clay, and glass fusing, and Advanced 3D Art, where upper-level students can combine multiple artistic mediums — like clay work and metal or beading skills — into unique, multi-faceted creations.

📝 School Storytellers: Thank you to Durango High School 3D Art Teacher Kayleigh Weir, who took time out of her day to share this classroom story.

🏡 A place to call home makes all the difference.

When we welcomed our first residents to Lightner Creek Village apartments in July, we asked what affordable employee housing meant to them. Their stories say it better than we ever could. ❤️

Today, our units at Lightner Creek Village are 94% occupied, and we’re expanding our employee housing program with six new townhomes at The Homestead — ready for move-in this summer.

We’re proud to help the people who serve our students put down roots in the community they love.

🎥 Hear from our employees about what having a place to call home means to them.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

Durango School District is proud to serve students representing 27 federally recognized tribes. Each student brings a unique identity, story, and perspective that enriches our school communities.

This beautiful wood engraving, created at Escalante Middle School last year, features a student’s poem, “Where I Am From,” celebrating family, culture, and identity.

“I am from sparkly regalia. From colored beads and bias tape.”

Today and every day, we celebrate the many voices and cultures that make our schools stronger. ❤️
