New Video Alert!

The Provost Office YouTube channel has been chatting with professors who have been with Fort Lewis for over ten years. Our very own Dr. Ross McCauley and some of his students were the latest feature!

"Our A Decade in the Life series celebrates Ross McCauley, professor of biology, whose passion for plants inspires students in the classroom and through collaborative research. Hear how he has helped grow the Fort Lewis College Herbarium from a little-known collection into a global resource and the fifth largest herbarium in Colorado."

It is Middle School Week at Fort Lewis! One week per semester, the Admissions Office hosts middle schoolers from across the Four Corners to give them a taste of what life could be like here. Departments across campus host short activities for students, and what better activity than looking at water samples under dissecting scopes? Today, we hosted some Pagosa Springs 8th graders, and they had quite the experience seeing all sorts of macroinvertebrates, including planaria, caddisfly larvae, and even a diving beetle!

First FLC Open House in the books! Senior Lab Coordinator Kami and FLC student Brooke led two experiential learning sessions this morning. They showed prospective students (and their families!) all the cool things you can see in ponds using dissecting microscopes. Thanks for hosting, Admissions, and a big thanks to everyone who came to see what the Fort is all about!

Nature Moment!
This swallowtail butterfly caterpillar didn't use the crosswalk and was caught trying to cross the road. No worries, though, as it was safely placed on the other side. A student who recognized this critter immediately rendered assistance.

Student Snapshot!
Shaina has been working in the herbarium under Dr. McCauley's supervision. Here, Shaina is making a preserved plant specimen mount to add to the collection. The step we caught was precisely gluing the plant so that every little detail sticks well to the mount for years to come.
