Yesterday we were reviewing doubles addition facts in Level 1.
After we finished 12 + 12, I threw out a bonus question:
โWhatโs 15 + 15?โ
Shastika immediately said 30.
Getting the answer right was great, but what made me so happy was HOW she figured it out.
She knew 10 + 10 = 20 and 5 + 5 = 10, so she broke apart the 15s and put them back together: 20 + 10 = 30.
And THIS is exactly what I've been trying to teach my students to do in math.
I grew up learning math procedurally and through memorization. I was shown HOW to solve something, I memorized the procedure, and I used it. I think this is part of the reason I sometimes have a hard time looking at numbers in different ways even now.
Over the last couple of years, I've changed the way I teach (and learn) math. Of course I still want my students to memorize their math facts, but I also want them to understand how numbers work together... break them apart, look for patterns, use base ten, and use things they already know to figure out things they don't.
So when a student does exactly that on her own, without me telling her what strategy to use...YESSSSSS. It's working. ๐
