Happy Monday! We're officially starting Week 8 at AAA+, which means we're already halfway through the semester! 😳

Does anyone else feel like August and September lasted approximately 6 months, but once October hits, you blink and it's Christmas? 😂

And yes, we still have classes today despite the holiday. See everyone in class!

The good thing about being a virtual school is that we can have classes no matter what…except when you live in an area where the power goes out every time a squirrel sneezes. (Ahem, Dunwoody. 👀)

So now I'm sitting here trying to figure out whether I need to stock up for a full city shutdown or if we're just getting a few wind gusts. Everyone stay safe out there.. or just carry on as normal. 😅

It feels like Fall Break has been going on since September! 😂 But I think we're finally wrapping up all the different school breaks and getting back into the thick of the semester…(just in time for all the holiday fun that comes with the last two months of the year. 😆)

One of my Level 2 students was absent all last week, so I asked him what he did over Fall Break. Well, he made sure to give me a VERY thorough synopsis of everything he did.

But before telling me about all his adventures, he made sure I knew that he had submitted his homework. We love students that have their priorities straight! 😂

Another AAA+ student was selected for his school’s gifted program!

We have quite a few students at AAA+ who are also in gifted programs at school. And while I would LOVE to take all the credit 😂, that wouldn’t be accurate.

Our program naturally attracts a lot of bright, motivated students. They work hard, their parents are incredibly involved in their education, and then we challenge them and give them opportunities to keep growing.

I’m always happy when AAA+ can help prepare or support a student along the way, but ultimately, the kids are the ones who have to do the work.

So congrats, Aadvik! Very well deserved! ❤️

Yesterday I was editing a lesson for our YouTube channel yesterday and came across this clip from the first Pre-K lesson where I introduced skip counting by 5s.

This is always one of the harder skills I introduce in Pre-K, but as I was getting ready to teach the literal FIRST lesson of it, 4-year-old Mohith raised his hand and casually started rattling off the entire sequence all the way to 100. 😂

Mohith had just joined our classes, so needless to say, I was quite surprised! Clearly he had been practicing at home, and even being new to the class, I already knew he had a preference for math. But still…having skip counting by 5s memorized at only 4 years old is quite the feat! 👏

I know at AAA+ we teach ahead…but apparently our students come in ready too. 💁🏻‍♀️

Every year around this time, I get asked about standardized test score results.

MAP scores in particular can be confusing if you don’t know what all of these numbers mean, so here’s a quick breakdown of how to read some of the main parts of the report.

But now I have to brag on this particular student for a minute. 😂

She came to AAA+ only this past spring. She only knew the basics of numbers and phonics. Fast forward a few months, and she has entered Kindergarten with a 169 in Math (99th percentile!) and a 149 in Reading (88th percentile!).

For even more perspective, her Math score of 169 is around the current national WINTER average for a first grader…and she just started Kindergarten. 🤯

Of course, a test score is only one measure of a student’s progress, but I am SO proud of how far she has come in such a short amount of time.

Throwback to 2019 when AAA+ classes were still in person! This is my niece Avery at 4 years old reading short-a words during one of our circle-time lessons.

Fun fact: Avery actually started reading when she was 3. She basically taught herself through YouTube videos and books, but it became pretty obvious that she had memorized a LOT of sight words rather than actually knowing how to sound words out. Once she started taking my classes, we worked on phonics and decoding, and you can see her sounding out the words here.

Also…please take a moment to appreciate my beautiful artwork on the board. 😂😂 We have come a LONG way from my hand-drawn pictures to the PowerPoints I teach with now.

I love teaching virtually, but I really loved our in-person classes too. I guess I just love teaching phonics in general. 😆

Here it is…the dreaded “new” way of doing math. 😂

I’ve posted about this multiple times before…the “Common Core” way of doing math. I know a lot of parents don’t like strategies like this because it can seem like we’re adding extra steps to a simple problem.

I didn’t like this strategy at first either. I actually hated teaching it because I found it confusing myself!

But after adding it to my curriculum over the last two years, I’ve completely changed my mind.

The objective of “Making a Ten” isn’t to make math harder. It’s to teach students to see how numbers can be broken apart and recombined in easier ways. When students understand how to make a friendly number like 90 first, they’re building the number sense and mental math skills they’ll need when the numbers get bigger and the math gets more complex.

I’ve seen where this strategy goes later, which is exactly why I want my students comfortable with it now.

So yes, this is officially something I’ll be teaching across all levels of my classes...starting in kindergarten.

Here’s the strategy in action…little mistakes and all. 🙂
