Today we remember January 8, 1956.

On this day 70 years ago, five missionaries — Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming, and Roger Youderian — lost their lives in the jungles of Ecuador while seeking to share the love of Christ with the Waodani people.

Their deaths marked a moment of profound loss, but their legacy did not end there. What followed was a story of forgiveness, reconciliation, and lives transformed by the Gospel — a reminder that faithfulness can bear fruit far beyond what we can see.

As we remember them today, we honor not only their sacrifice, but the enduring impact their lives continue to have around the world.

In March, the ITEC mechanical team travelled to Southeast Asia to provide a six-day training in small engine repairs and maintenance. The ITEC farm training teaches indigenous Christ followers how to increase their harvests and steward the land and resources they have been given in a way that honors God, and opens the door to share the Good News of Jesus with their communities. Trainees get their hands dirty making and turning compost, preparing their fields for the growing season, laying down mulch, and learning how timing and setting high standards impacts their harvests.

They also learn the keys to conservation agriculture: permanent soil cover with mulch or crop residue, minimum soil disturbance, and crop rotation. Debt, stewardship, wise spending, and giving are also taught from a spiritual and practical perspective to inspire trainees to prepare for potential financial challenges and see how they can have financial freedom and show them the reality of challenges that may stand in their way.

We honor God by stewarding the land He has made and the material resources He has placed in our lives. Once equipped with practical skills to increase their harvest, indigenous Christ followers are able to help address the physical and spiritual hunger in their communities. Want to learn more? In April, the ITEC mechanical and dental teams traveled to a predominantly muslim country. Every trip has its challenges, but this one was particularly complex. Both the mechanical and dental teams conducted their trainings at a local school. However, a unique situation arose for the dental team—they were asked to do the tooth extractions at the residence of the area chief, who is a Muslim. The chief had granted approval for our trainings in his community, and our team worked diligently to preserve a healthy relationship between the Christ followers being trained and our host. ITEC’s eyesight training requires minimal training for both the trainer and the trainee, making it an easily accessible tool for any trip or church group. Once on the ground, the team will instruct the local Christ followers selected by the church how to complete the exam and fit glasses. This also gives them the opportunity to share the Gospel and pray with the patients.

The goal and exciting part of the Eyesight training program is that the ministry will continue after the trip. Trainees will keep the kit that includes 200 pairs of glasses, so the opportunity for God to use these trainees and churches to reach their communities is vast! In June, the ITEC film training team traveled to North Africa to teach local Christ followers how to tell their stories through mobile filmmaking. We partnered with one of the two known evangelical churches in the country to equip local church members attending university in the city. Security concerns for both our team and our trainees meant that we had to stay inside the church building the entire time, and all of the filming had to be done within one small space. Despite these limitations, the trainees demonstrated incredible creativity, using every corner of the building in creative ways to film their projects.
