With the welcomed addition of Dr Carol Shwetz DVM to this work I’ve been very quiet on the pelvic collapse front….not because there hasn’t been work happening but because joining all the dots together with the breadcrumbs horses bodies leave us has become a recognisable pattern. One that has formed quite the data set for collecting information and recognising patterns. With the formation of Etica Equine Charitable Trust to under take this mammoth task in collating the data. We are lucky to have two academics on the board of trustees to oversee this study.

Organising all the data points and understanding what might be happening at what point is a massive task! The changes we are seeing from hooves to lumbar and up the connections of soft tissues is truely quiet the chain of action and reaction. Compensation seems to play a huge role in the way the body adapts to such a mechanical failure of the skeletal system. The changes to soft tissues are notable and obvious in dissection.

I value working as part of a team so much because this work is truely overwhelming at times. If you follow me on patreon, I’ve been very honest about the toll of the work. This is going to take a community of collaboration. For more information on our pelvic study, check out the Etica website www.eticaequine.com

I have done an updated video on patreon discussing some of the new discussions happening around what the bones are recording and how dissections are leading the conversations.

Great post, and another reason why we need to teach our horses to distribute their weight first, and before we ask for their hoof.

Yes!

The replay (2h 20mins!!) for the 3:1 reinhold webinar is now available!

What participants say:

"Your presentation is a complete revelation!" - Beverley, Spain.

"Riding 3:1 is a game changer!" - Elaine, England

"I have ridden for 50+ years and I have short arms - rein contact has been such a problem for me, with conflicting information being given about the correct length. For the first time ever, I understood rein length with so much more clarity! You are a truly gifted teacher! - Susan, Scotland

************

There isn't a lot of information about the 3:1 reinhold out there - so I've put together this manual of
💎 how to use the 3:1,
💎 how to teach it to your horse,
💎 a short history of the 3:1 reinhold,
💎 what the benefits are,
💎 why and how it helps the seat,
💎 possible tack combinations,
💎 we practiced together how to sort the reins,
💎 and I showed lots of cool footage with my horses!

Replay now available for a limited time, 4 weeks access from the time of purchase.

After 25 years, my last immersions🫶

I'm writing with news I've been holding close. I am selling my farm — and with it, closing the chapter on the private immersions I've hosted here.

This is the last time I'll ever offer them. There won't be another season.

If you've ever wanted to come — three or five days, one-on-one or with one other, fully customized to you and your horse, staying in the guest house on the property — this is the moment. Bring your horse, or work with mine.

See the details: https://www.taoofhorsemanship.com/final-immersions

Dates are limited and will be scheduled around the sale of the farm. Reply to this email and tell me what you're hoping for. I'll create the immersion around you.

May you always be one with your horse,
Caroline

Can we really compare horse and human brains? 🧠🐴

This brilliant piece by Tami Elkayam asks a question the horse world needs to sit with: horses are born with their survival systems already wired — standing, seeing, bonding within hours — while humans spend decades building theirs through language and experience.

So when we interpret horse behavior through a human emotional lens, we may be projecting an architecture they simply don't have.

I agree with the science. And after 25+ years and thousands of horses, I've seen the other half of the story: horses ARE born ready — but they are not finished. They seek out the nervous systems most like their own. Insecure horses find insecure horses. But develop that horse's nervous system, help it find regulation… and watch who it gravitates to next. 💛

That's development. That's an emotional landscape growing — built not through words, but through embodied experience. And it's exactly why our own nervous system is the most powerful tool we bring to the barn.

The piece asks an uncomfortable but necessary question: if human-style emotion is built through that long, language-soaked developmental window, does it even make sense to expect the same kind of emotion in a species whose nervous system arrives largely pre-wired? Are we projecting a very human emot...
