🖼️ 🚎 Exploring the History of Northeastern Pennsylvania wrapped up their week of camp today. Explorers learned about the rich history of anthracite coal in our region through a tour of the coal mine at McDade Park, explored the rooms and spaces created by the Masons at the Scranton Cultural Center, observed the various exhibits and art that is featured at the Everhart Museum, and took a ride on a 100 year trolley through Scranton. They even got to see Big Boy 🚂 Students learned so much about our region this week that makes Northeastern Pennsylvania who we are. Thank you families and we hope you enjoy your summer!

🧬 🔬 💻 Last week, our DEC students had an exciting time at our STEM Camp!
Our 3rd and 4th graders tested how much weight a tinfoil boat could hold, made whipped cream, and through the magic of science, learned that fast moving air causes low air pressure. Meanwhile, our 5th and 6th graders got creative with Micro:bits, painted with pendulums, and participated in the Egg Drop Challenge.
For her senior project, high school senior Alicia Velasco shadowed our camp and spoke with our students about how STEM based classes have shaped her future plans. She even brought in the trebuchet she built for a spring competition to give everyone a hands on look at engineering in action.
The IDEA Center Field Trip
All campers visited the IDEA Center at the University of Scranton, where they worked in teams to complete the Entrepreneurship Challenge. Each group created an original business idea and developed the key elements of a successful company. As a keepsake of their time there, director Tom Bryan laser engraved their business logo designs onto wooden keychains!

A Special Thank You
Thanks to the generous support of the Dunmore Area Education Foundation, we were able to purchase all of our camp supplies, and they even treated us to lunch one day!
We're so proud of all our campers and the creativity and curiosity they brought to each day. We wish everyone a fun, relaxing, and STEM-tastic summer!
