Since I'm not currently involved in theater costuming, I'm taking some time to work on our 18th century kits. The husband and I participate in living history encampments, portraying a French and Indian War era soldier of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment and his camp follower wife.
I've had this printed cotton neck handkerchief for several seasons now. I purchased it ready-made from a sutler, even though it was rectangular and machine hemmed--two things that made it less accurate, but easy enough to fix for a seamstress.
I took out the zig-zag machine hem, straightened one raw edge and then squared up the piece by pulling a thread and cutting carefully along the grain.
Now I'm relaxing in my easy chair while working on this pesky, teeny tiny rolled hem.
