Today we are honored to recognize Severino Chaidez of La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant. His story is one of hard work, perseverance, sacrifice, family, and never being afraid to take a chance. From humble beginnings to building a successful business and continuing to give back to those around him, his journey is such a meaningful example for our students and our community.

Severino Chaidez โ€” La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant

Born in 1965 in the small rancho of Luna Gonzรกlez, Durango, Mexico, Severino came to the United States in the early 1980s in search of greater opportunities. As one of the oldest of 13 siblings, he spent years working long hours in restaurants, starting as a dishwasher, while sending money home to help support his family in Mexico and saving what he could.

After years of hard work and saving, he took a chance and invested alongside two friends to open La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant in Duncan in 2000. Over the years, La Fiesta expanded to other Oklahoma locations, and he continued growing as an entrepreneur through restaurants and real estate.

Through both successes and setbacks, Severino has always believed in taking risks, working hard, and never being afraid to start over. Despite his success, he remains incredibly humble and is always willing to help wherever he is needed.

His greatest values have always been simple: work hard, stay humble, help others, take chances, and always put family first.

Our tortilla learning continued right into our dramatic play center! After watching how fresh tortillas are made, our students recreated the experience themselves by placing their pretend tortillas on the comal and carefully flipping them just like they had seen earlier in the day. ๐Ÿซ“โœจ

This was such a meaningful way for our students to take what they learned and bring it into their play. They practiced imagination, language, turn-taking, fine motor skills, and social skills while exploring an important part of Hispanic food and culture.

We love seeing our students connect real-life experiences to play because that is where so much learning happens! โค๏ธ

After learning how tortillas are made, each of our students got their very own freshly made tortilla to taste! Watching their reactions was the sweetest part some took a careful first bite, while others gave us an immediate thumbs-up! ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ‘

This was such a fun way to bring our Hispanic Heritage Month learning to life through culture, tradition, hands-on experiences, and of course, a delicious taste test!

A Special Hispanic Heritage Month Experience: Making Tortillas Together! ๐ŸŒฝ๐ŸคŽ

Today we had the honor of welcoming Mrs. Dalila, Ms. Josieโ€™s mom, to Shining Stars Academy Early Childhood Center! Our students welcomed her with a big โ€œยกHola!โ€ before she spent time teaching them how to make tortillas from start to finish. โค๏ธ

Our students watched as the dough was mixed and shaped, learned how the tortilla press works, and even had the opportunity to feel the dough and take part in the process themselves. There is something so special about learning through real experiences, especially when those experiences allow our students to explore culture, traditions, and food in such a meaningful way.

We are so thankful to Mrs. Dalila for taking the time to come into our classroom and share this experience with our students. Moments like these are exactly what we love about celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month bringing generations together, sharing traditions, and giving our students memories they can truly be a part of. ๐ŸŒฎโœจ

Our students learned all about tortillas today! ๐ŸŒฎ๐ŸคŽ

We talked about how tortillas are used in many delicious foods and how they are an important part of Hispanic culture and cuisine.

Then our students got creative with their own tortilla coloring activity.

This hands-on activity gave them a fun way to explore culture while also practicing fine motor skills, creativity, decision-making, and vocabulary.

As we continue celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, our students explored familiar shapes while discovering foods, traditions, music, and everyday objects inspired by Hispanic culture. โค๏ธ

We loved seeing our students make connections between the shapes in the story and the world around them learning that a tortilla is round, a slice of watermelon can be a triangle, and shapes are everywhere! ๐ŸŒŸ

Celebrating different cultures in my early childhood education center is something I will always take great pride in. Being able to teach our students about different cultures, traditions, people, and stories is such an important part of what we do at Shining Stars Academy Early Childhood Center. โค๏ธ

Hispanic culture has always been incorporated into our learning through our lessons, books, classroom activities, dramatic play items, music, art, and so much more. Hispanic Heritage Month gives us an extra-special opportunity to celebrate, honor, and learn even more!

This year, we wanted to do something a little different. We created our very own Hispanic Heritage Wall of Fame, featuring many wonderful Hispanic members of our local community! ๐ŸŒŸ

It was truly such an honor to speak with so many different people and hear their beautiful stories their journeys, accomplishments, dreams, businesses, careers, and the paths that brought them to where they are today.

We are so thankful for everyone who was excited to be a part of this special project and who trusted us to share their photos and stories with our students and community. Everyone was so kind, supportive, and full of joy, and that made this project even more meaningful to us.

Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be sharing each of their photos and stories so that you can get to know some of the amazing people represented on our wall.

When you see someone you know, cheer them on, tag them, share their story, and let them know how proud you are of them! We sure are! โค๏ธ๐ŸŒŸ
