Our Infant Self-Portrait Project
This week, the infants are creating a special project all about themselves. Each child chose a paint color, had their picture taken, and added a handprint to a piece of paper featuring their name. Once finished, the projects were placed at floor level so the children could see and explore them each day.

Art offers infants so many opportunities to learn, grow, and express themselves. As they move their hands and fingers across the paper and grip paintbrushes, they strengthen their fine motor skills. Sitting upright, reaching across the paper, and painting with their arms also engage their core, shoulders, and larger muscle groups.

Painting helps develop hand-eye coordination as infants watch their hands move across the paper. They begin to learn about cause and effect, spatial awareness, and early math and science concepts as they observe colors mixing and changing. It’s also a rich sensory experience filled with new textures, movements, and colors.

During the activity, teachers support language development by describing what is happening, naming colors, spelling each child’s name, and pointing to letters. Infants also communicate nonverbally through their facial expressions, gestures, movements, and creative choices.

Most of all, art gives infants a safe and soothing way to express themselves. Choosing their own colors, deciding where to place the paint, and exploring it freely can build confidence and create a wonderful sense of accomplishment.
