Students made some beautiful felted wall hangings in April! Instructor Patty Salo Downs showed students how to use wet felting techniques to make their own Spring-inspired creations.
Are you interested in learning about felting? We have another felting class coming up in June. Find more information here: https://duluthfolkschool.com/events/introduction-to-2-d-felting-using-prefelts-to-create-a-wet-felted-artwork/

Devan made this beautiful new coat rack, and incorporated lessons he learned at a Timber Framing class. It looks pretty good with our new shirts on it!

We learned how to make green wood shrink boxes with instructor Erik Vevang in April.
Students learned how to hollow out a branch, cut a slot in the bottom of the cylinder and snap in a bottom piece. The green wood then dries and shrinks around the dry bottom locking it in place. With a tight fitting lid, shrink boxes have traditionally been used to store salt, spices and other valuables.

Devan tests a lattice structure he's making in the back for our "Wings for Tim: Birds & the Future" installation.
He was really pleased! He enjoyed weaving the wood, and how the whole thing weighs less than two 2x4s.
This picture of Devan is in the back! This is where we want to build Tim's Workshop: an accessible classroom and workshop for all of Duluth.
If you had the good fortune to know Tim, you know one reason he co-founded Duluth Folk School was that he loved teaching. (He was a master at it too.) This extra classroom would enable so many students and instructors, of all mobility, learn and teach.
Tim passed away before he could finish helping Duluth Folk School raise the funds for this classroom. And so it falls to all of us to raise the funds to make this happen. If you are interested in helping us in this upcoming capital campaign, please contact us.
Otherwise, consider donating to our There's a Good World to Build: 10th Anniversary Fundraiser. We are trying to raise $100,000 by the end of the year to ensure we're a vibrant place for the next ten years, as well as having the capacity for a successful build-out and capital campaign.
