Congrats to Laura Howe for winning the RSOP Outdoor Program Volunteer of the Year Award. The Outdoor Program offers a wide variety of educational, experiential and recreational opportunities for students and the greater UMD community to engage with the outdoors. The majority of these programs are designed and delivered by the Outdoor Program Volunteer staff, who are essential in creating opportunities that engage individuals in the outdoors and other niche outdoor related activities. Each year we recognize an outstanding Outdoor Program volunteer who has provided outstanding service and contributions to the Outdoor Program.

Congrats to Trevor Koenig for winning the Hans Hicks Memorial Award! This award is intended to recognize an outstanding outdoor educator in the spirit of Hans. “Hans was loved by his peers, his students, and friends. He set high standards for himself, for the Outdoor Programs in which he was involved, and for any endeavor he pursued. Hans was physically talented, which combined with his determination enabled him to become an expert climber, paddler, and become accomplished in other physically challenging activities. With his intelligence, wealth of knowledge, and 110% effort output, he became an outstanding teacher, demonstrating sound reasoning behind every action and decision. Hans lived life with dignity, did not seek the limelight, taught and acted with passion and compassion.”

Congrats to Nate Dahl, Henry Brandt, and Morgan Kapps for winning the Dr. Ken Gilbertson Leadership Award! Recipients of this scholarship are graduate or undergraduate students at UMD who participate in the Outdoor Program and demonstrate exceptional leadership.
