Taking lessons from the classroom to the newsroom 🎥

As an intern reporter at KBJR, Marisa Ornat is already applying coursework in the real world. Ornat — known to her friends and colleagues as Mo — is halfway through her senior year, pursuing a major in Journalism with minors in Spanish and Arts in the Media.

“I’ve learned to jump on every opportunity that presents itself,” Ornat said. “The unknown sometimes turns out to be a really good thing.”

Congratulations to Interim Dean Brady!

Help CAHSS welcome Interim Dean Jennifer Brady and wish outgoing Dean Jeremy Youde the best of luck as he ventures west to take on a new role with Portland State University!

Dr. Jeremy Youde originally served UMD as an assistant professor of political science from 2008 to 2016. He returned to UMD in 2019, soon taking on the role of Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. We are grateful for Dean Youde’s years of service — including his guidance during the global pandemic — and will miss his empathetic leadership, commitment to academics, and (of course) the stunning array of bowties.

Dr. Jennifer Brady has been with UMD since 2013 and most recently served as department head of World Languages and Cultures, as well as an associate professor of Spanish. We are thrilled for Dr. Brady to step into this key role.

Interim Dean Brady joins us as we also welcome UMD’s new Chancellor, Dr. Charles Nies. Stay tuned to this space for updates around this energizing moment for UMD and CAHSS!

Our French Cuisine course connects culture and food!

UMD honors students prepare five courses of French cuisine for their final exam A final exam for UMD students included making a five course French meal for people in the community on Monday evening.

French cuisine class focuses on bigger picture of food and connection with culture UMD's French Cuisine class takes over the teaching kitchen at Duluth East on Wednesday evenings, and focuses on making delicious food.

Students from the French Club hung hand-crafted valentines in the hallways. Way to show some love, bulldogs!

Olivia is double-majoring in French Studies and Environment, Sustainability and Geography; minoring in Political Science. Maddie is double-majoring in Criminology and Psychology with a French Studies Minor.
