Our longtime University for Seniors member, Dick Swenson, invented the Sven-Saw way back in 1961, right here in Duluth. Years later, the Sven-Saw is still the staple of back country campers everywhere! The Sven-Saw could become THE Coolest Thing Made in Minnesota by winning a contest of 64 worthy contenders. If you wish to support Dick and vote, simply go to www.coolestthingmn.com. You are able to vote for the Sven-Saw once each day in Matchup #3! The first bracket goes Sept. 3-8. The Sven-Saw will be in a bracket-style competition with one other MN-made product each week of September. The top vote-getters will advance to the next tournament-style round.

Remembering Portia Johnson

We were saddened to learn that longtime University for Seniors member, Portia Johnson, passed away last weekend. Portia was a mother of four and served as an activist, community leader, educator, and mentor since arriving in Duluth in 1966.

Please take a moment to learn more about Portia's life and compassionate work she's done throughout the Duluth community. She will be missed.

The UMD Archives has several interviews with Portia from a 2016 series called the Duluth African-American Oral History Project.

Congratulations to Marv!!!

At Friday's renaming ceremony at Walt Hunting Stadium and Marv Heikkinen Field, many of the best-known athletes who competed there will be honored on the pillars at the stadium's entrance.

The new signage and pillars will be unveiled Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. before the 7 p.m. football game between Denfeld and Grand Rapids.
