Denfeld is Western Duluth's first high school, though it wasn’t always called Denfeld. The first classes were held at Irving School, 101 N. 56th Ave. For several years it was known as Duluth Industrial High School. When United States Steel announced its intentions to build the Morgan Park neighborhood as a planned community for its steel plant, the Duluth School Board spent $175,000 to build a new, independent high school. Denfeld High School opened at 725 N. The building currently serving as Denfeld High School opened at 4405 W. Fourth St. on Sept. 8, 1926. It cost $1.25 million.

On Friday, Denfeld celebrated the centennial of its building by removing a time capsule placed in the cornerstone a century ago.

A new time capsule — set to be opened in 2076, when Denfeld High School turns 150 — will be placed in the cornerstone.

The Denfeld boys soccer team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat host Chisago Lakes 5-1 on Saturday, giving head coach Scott Anderson his 300th career victory with the Hunters.

Anderson, who is starting his 33rd season at the helm, now has a record of 300-236-53 with the Hunters.

Walter J. Hunting, veteran Denfeld football coach and athletic director, resigned his post as the school's assistant principal 70 years ago. He had retired from coaching in the fall of 1955 after the Denfeld-Central game.

Hunting retired from his assistant principal position in 1956. The previous fall, he had retired from his coaching duties.

Denfeld grad Ben Kidd is running Grandma's Marathon one year after nearly dying in a construction zone crash along Minnesota Highway 61 just north of Two Harbors.
