Undergraduate students can choose from 13 bachelor degrees in 77 majors and 63 minors. In addition to the two-year program at the School of Medicine and a College of Pharmacy program, UMD offers graduate programs in 24 different fields, participates in three all-university PhD programs (one of which is located primarily on the UMD campus), and cooperates significantly in the delivery of six Twin C

From guitar jams to the cabbage patch.

UMD alumni Rick Dalen (’03) and Adam Kemp (’11) first bonded over music as students. Today, they’re harmonizing in a different way—running Spirit Creek Farm in Wrenshall, MN.
By turning their winter cabbage harvest into organic sauerkraut and kimchi, they aren’t just creating delicious food; they’re keeping their local workforce employed year-round.

UMD Associate Professor Sharyl Samargia-Grivette has been exploring novel interventions to aid in stroke recovery. Her research into how the brain heals after injury aims to unlock new, effective therapies that improve quality of life for both patients and their families.

The UMD campus will be closed Monday, May 25, 2026 for the Memorial Day holiday. All campus outside doors will remain locked and accessible by U Card only. The campus will reopen on Tuesday, May 26.

UMD alumna, Meg Carney, ’14, is an author, podcast producer and host, and freelance journalist for some of the top outdoor and environmental publications. Her book, Outdoor Minimalist: Waste Less Hiking, Camping, and Backpacking (‘22), and podcast of the same name, cover sustainable outdoor gear production, conservation, inclusivity, and anything that would intersect with climate change in the outdoors.

Where limnological research often begins with a paddle.

Victor Lai, PhD, an associate professor of chemical engineering at the UMD, is part of a research team investigating how Lyme disease infection changes feeding behavior in ticks. The team is also studying other bacteria that may reduce tick feeding and, in turn, lower the transmission of Lyme disease.
