“Go to school, and become doctors... for the future of American Indian Peoples.”

Growing up as a Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe descendant, Casey Dorr, PhD (BS ’04), took his grandfather’s words to heart. Driven by a passion for discovery and community, Dr. Dorr chose UMD for its approachable campus and robust support systems, including the American Indian Learning Resource Center (AILRC).

Today, he is fulfilling his grandfather's vision serving as an associate professor in the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and adjunct associate professor in the College of Pharmacy. As a researcher, he is tackling a critical health disparity: while chronic kidney disease affects 1 in 7 Americans, it impacts 1 in 4 Native Americans. Dr. Dorr’s work focuses on improving kidney transplant longevity—especially for Black and Indigenous patients, whose transplanted organs currently last about half as long as the national average.

Beyond the lab, Dr. Dorr is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of Indigenous scientists through organizations like American Indian Science and Engineering Society and Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science, ensuring the bridge between worldviews remains strong.
