"Aramaic was firmly established in Palestine by the 1st century AD, although Hebrew still remained the learned and sacred language. Thus the Targums were designed to meet the needs of unlearned Jews to whom the Hebrew of the Old Testament was unintelligible....It was in the synagogue that the practice of reading from the Old Testament became widely observed, along with the custom of providing these readings with a translation into Aramaic. When Scripture was read aloud in the synagogue, it was translated aloud by a meturgeman, or professional interpreter (hence the name Targum), for the benefit of the congregation."

Since Babel, the language barrier has been one of the most significant dividers among people, perhaps even more than economic status, personality, race, or place of origin. None of these is a match for Christ’s work! (1 Cor. 12:12-13; Eph. 2:14ff; Rev. 7:9)

Is your church striving to spread the gospel to the surrounding Spanish-speaking community and dwell together as one body despite language differences?

This is a common situation in the US context, but it creates obvious challenges. I consider it a personal mission to help with these challenges. Can I help you and the Christians in your area?
