Next up in our Graduate Student Spotlight: Conner Boorman!🎓
Conner's most impactful experience at UMD was his time studying abroad at University College Dublin in Ireland. He says that it opened his eyes to a different environment and culture.
He also appreciates the social work faculty members who helped him during his academic journey. "The time and effort that others have put into helping me become the best version of myself is truly extraordinary, and I believe it speaks to the dedication and quality of this university," he says. "I have been changed for the better by my time at UMD, and the skills I have learned both in the classroom and outside of it have (I believe) truly prepared me for my career and the rest of my life."
Conner wants to use his degree to work in macro social work, with a focus on policy. He aims to create more supportive communities through government legislation. 🙌

As practicum supervisor for UMD’s Master of Social Work program, Sara Lien helps students turn their passions into action!
She has some sage advice for students. “Check in with yourself regularly about your values and the reasons you are pursuing social work. It’s an important task to help you stay healthy and balanced when the work gets difficult,” she says. “Also, build in time for fun, play, silliness, and humor. Play is highly undervalued in our society, and it’s such a necessary doorway for joy and resilience.”
