The National Rivers Hall of Fame is honored to announced the 2024 Hall of Fame inductees, Captain Clarke C. "Doc" Hawley and William Christopher (W.C.) Handy. The pair were selected by the public, National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium members and supporters through a ballot voting process in September. They join nearly 100 Hall of Fame members who's profound impact have benefited America's river history and the future of our waterways.

This month we are introducing Alan Bates! Bates designed the steamboat “Natchez” and is known as a steamboat expert on a global level. He served as first mate on the Belle for a number of years and received his master’s license.

Today we are featuring the most renowned mountain boat pilot on the upper Missouri River. At age 16, Captain Joseph LaBarge began as a fur trader and quickly became steamboat clerk and then apprentice pilot. LaBarge obtained his master’s license at age 25, serving as a charter captain and piloting the John James Audubon expedition in 1843.
