The B-WISER science camp at The College of Wooster offers middle and high school girls a week of hands-on discovery, friendship, and growth. Since 1990, B-WISER (Buckeye Women in Science, Engineering & Research) has sparked excitement in science through active learning in college labs, guided by experienced teachers and college professors. Campers live on campus, collaborate to collect and analyze data, and build lasting friendships in a supportive environment that celebrates curiosity and empowers every student’s potential.

Tippecanoe High School student, Aubrey Ernst attended the science camp in summer 2026, relating her experiences here:

“The College of Wooster B-WISER Science Camp was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It opened new fields of science that I didn’t know I could enjoy so much. I learned from women scientists who bolstered my confidence in myself and as a scientist. But by far the most valuable part of camp were the girls I met.”

“The 32 high schoolers at the camp were divided into 4 groups of 8, each with a college aged counselor who had completed B-WISER when they were our age. This system allowed us to form really close bonds with the girls in our groups which was the highlight of the camp.”

“One of the most amazing things was how similar everyone was, in the best way possible. There was someone at the camp who loved the same thing that you love, no matter how rare that thing is. I literally met a girl who played the same instrument as me - and I’ve only met two other people who play that instrument. I met another girl who’s project was next to mine at State Science Day. We didn’t say a single word to each other for the entire day, but we recognized each other at B-WISER and became fast friends. There were girls who did cross country and girls who loved musicals, just like me.”

“It was so cool being in a community of girls who love science just as much as you do. When everyone connects in that way, it is so easy to become friends. Girls you normally wouldn’t interact with become your closest friends. There is no pressure to act a certain way or to hide any part of yourself. And even though the camp was focused on science, we still got to do fun stuff and be teenage girls.”

“B-WISER opened my eyes to what my life can look like after I graduate. Being with a group of like minded girls allowed me to focus on the things I love and form friendships that will last a lifetime. There are so many people who are just like me, so even though the world may see me as a “girl scientist”, I know that there is a place where I will just be a “scientist”.”

Flashback to OAS April Events: Student Wildlife Research Symposium (SWRS)

This inspiring, career-connected annual event showcasing student research focused on wildlife and natural resource issues was held during the Annual Conference of the Environmental Education Council of Ohio (EECO) at Shawnee State Park on April 9, 2026. Students shared their research through podium presentations and poster sessions, networked with peers and wildlife professionals from ODNR Division of Wildlife, and viewed a variety of fish from the Ohio River provided by the Ohio River Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) in their Life Below the Waterline traveling freshwater aquarium.

Pulling it all together was the keynote by Jordan Skates, Manager, Appalachian Hills/Wolf Creek Wildlife Areas for the Division of Wildlife. Jordan had been a student presenter at the 2018 SWRS and a multi-year participant in OAS Science Days. She shared how impactful experiential learning and networking were in influencing her career and how they continue to shape her career success. . Kudos to all the students and teachers for their participation in this wonderful event!
